2017 Women's Tennis Outlook

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Three regulars from last year's singles and doubles lineups are back to anchor a small Saint Michael's College women's tennis team in 2017, with five veterans and three newcomers looking to help the Purple Knights build upon a near-postseason berth a year ago.

Won two more matches in 2016 than the prior year despite departure of two of top three singles players, a duo that also played in the top two doubles spots ... return regulars from No. 2, 4 and 6 singles, and three who were doubles staples ... two seniors are fewest since 2013 team had none ... eight players match team's smallest roster since 2010-11, when Purple Knights were NE10 semifinalists ... qualified for NE10 Championship 16 times in 18 years league has had team tournament format.

Saint Michael's opens the season by hosting Daemen (N.Y.) College on Saturday before kicking off NE10 play at home against Franklin Pierce University on Sept. 16 ... the Purple Knights oppose three squads that qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament, hosting Stonehill College on Sept. 17 before visiting Adelphi University on Oct. 8 and Southern New Hampshire University on Oct. 14 ... after playing six of its first eight matches at home, the Purple and Gold hits the road for five of its final six regular-season contests ... the top six teams in the final regular-season standings begin NE10 Championship play on Oct. 25.
