CANTON, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team finished 3-1 at the season-opening Victory Promotions Invitational thanks to a pair of victories on Saturday at Saint Lawrence University's Burkman Gymnasium. The Purple Knights knocked off the hosts, 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-12), before also blanking the State University of New York at Oswego, 3-0 (25-22, 25-9, 25-14). Junior Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) landed on the all-tournament team, becoming the fourth player in program history to eclipse the 2,000-assist plateau for a career.
McLeod reached her milestone in the Purple Knights' opener with Saint Lawrence, providing 31 assists and seven digs. Senior Katie Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I./The Prout School) had 11 kills, and junior Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) added 10. Senior Courtney Dunne (Hopkinton, Mass./Bancroft School) picked up 21 digs, classmate Tracy Peterka (Newport Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) had 11, and junior Brianna Saunders (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) provided seven.
First-year Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) nearly posted her second double-double in three matches, collecting 13 kills and nine digs against SUNY Oswego. McLeod added six kills and 31 assists, and Dunne notched 19 digs, moving within nine of becoming the fourth Purple Knight with 1,000 for a career. Peterka collected 10 digs, Walsh had seven, and Covitz picked up four blocks.
The Purple Knights head to Plymouth State University on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match.
