Women's volleyball blanks pair at SUNY Plattsburgh tournament

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team notched a pair of victories on Friday during the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic, blanking Elms College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-7), and Cazenovia (N.Y.) College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-8), in Memorial Hall. The Purple Knights improved to 5-1, Elms is 0-8, and Cazenovia slipped to 2-9.

In the opener against the Blazers, senior Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) had six kills, four aces and four blocks, while classmate Brianna Saunders (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) totaled five kills. Sophomore Candace Washington (New Carrollton, Md./Parkdale) added four kills, and classmate Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and first-year Megan Mulvaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) notched three kills apiece. Senior Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) collected 13 assists and seven digs in two sets, while first-year Catie Weller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) dished off eight helpers in her lone set. Classmate Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) chipped in three aces, junior Hillary Miller (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh/Colby-Sawyer) tacked on 11 digs, and senior Lindsay Phenix (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic) had three blocks.

Versus Cazenovia, Flaherty dropped 15 kills on 24 swings while also contributing 11 digs, and Covitz collected six kills. Washington had four kills, Moore tallied six aces and six digs, senior Cynthia Edgerton (Vail, Colo./Vail Mountain School) totaled four aces, and first-year Natalia Maccarrone (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) picked up five digs. McLeod turned in 22 assists in two sets, and Weller had five in one set.

The Purple Knights begin the final day of the tournament tomorrow against in-state counterpart Norwich University at 11:30 a.m., with a second match against a team yet to be determined at a time to be announced.
