WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) became the 13th player in Saint Michael's College women's volleyball history to reach the 500-kill plateau during the Purple Knights' 3-1 (17-25, 25-12, 25-21, 25-14) setback to Assumption College on Saturday during Northeast-10 Conference action at Laska Gymnasium. Saint Michael's is now 5-7 overall and 0-5 in the league, while the Greyhounds are 4-9 and 2-4.
Flaherty posted eight kills to reach 500 on the nose in her team's first match in a week. She added 11 digs and two aces, improving her digs total to 606 for her career, while junior Candace Washington (New Carrollton, Md./Parkdale) and first-year Megan Priester (Dover, N.H./Dover) both notched five kills to go along with five and three blocks, respectively. Sophomore Megan Mulvaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) totaled four kills and two blocks, classmate Catie Weller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) had 21 assists and 10 digs, and sophomore Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted 20 digs.
Senior Ann Donahue (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) paced Assumption with 19 kills and four blocks, first-year Stephanie Hawley (Savannah, Ga./Saint Vincent's Academy) had 13 kills and 16 digs, and graduate student Alie Carlson (Amston, Conn./RHAM) turned in 11 kills. First-year Kiki Romanik (San Rafael, Calif./Sir Francis Drake) handed out 45 assists, while junior Courtney Bagwell (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) and first-year Maria Chrisom (Dover, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) both contributed 17 digs.
Eighteen of the Purple Knights' points in the opening set came courtesy of Assumption offensive or serve-related errors, and their 13-10 lead slowly expanded to 18-11 thanks to Moore's kill and four Greyhound attack miscues. A service error at set point gave Saint Michael's a 1-0 lead in the match. A 9-0 run, keyed by four kills from Hawley, helped the hosts forge a 17-3 advantage to begin the second set before the Purple Knights mounted a 7-3 charge to whittle the deficit, but Assumption tallied the final two points to knot the match.
A 6-0 run put the visitors on top by a 7-5 count early in set No. 3 before the Greyhounds countered with five straight points of the own, as they eventually held a 17-10 lead. Flaherty's kill capped an ensuing 4-0 run, and Saint Michael's later drew within two points before still trailing just 24-21 on Mulvaney's kill, but Donahue notched a kill on the next play. Assumption scored nine of the first 10 points in the fourth set and never again led by fewer than five points.
Saint Michael's turns around for its second match in three days on Monday when it hosts Saint Anselm College at 7 p.m.
