COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team capped a two-match home weekend with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-20) loss to perennial regional power Adelphi University on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center. The Purple Knights are 1-15 overall and 1-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Panthers improved to 11-11 and 7-3. Adelphi qualified for the past 10 NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the past three NE10 Championship title matches, winning twice.
Senior McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) posted five kills on .357 hitting for the hosts, sophomore Tanner Barton (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls) had four kills and five digs, while senior Megan Priester (Dover, N.H./Dover) collected four kills. First-year Katy Konow (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) turned in eight assists and five digs, junior Sarah Rodgers (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) posted eight digs and six helpers, while senior Julia Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched seven digs.
First-year Victoria Cast notched nine kills in two sets for Adelphi, junior McKenna Clawson had seven, and senior Megan Manierski dished out 27 assists to go along with eight digs. Sophomore Katarina Warburton totaled 21 digs.
The Purple Knights took a 3-0 lead in the opening set on first-year Jillian Harvie's (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) kill, and the hosts extended their advantage to 12-7 following a Panther error. Adelphi used an 8-2 run to push in front before the teams exchanged go-ahead 3-0 spurts, ultimately playing through five ties down the stretch. Saint Michael's led 20-19 on an Adelphi attack error before three straight points put the visitors up for good. Kills by Barton and Priester made it 22-21 and 23-22, respectively, but the final two points came on Panther kills.
Junior Gabby Ratte's (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) kill brought her team within 5-3 in the second set before Cast had consecutive kills to begin a 4-0 run, but three straight Adelphi errors allowed Saint Michael's to trail just 9-6. However, a 6-1 run pushed the visitors' edge to eight, and the Panthers led 18-11 before scoring the final seven points.
Set No. 3 saw McNamara record a block and an ace during a 4-1 start, and Adelphi forced five ties before consecutive errors gave the hosts a 13-11 lead. However, Purple Knight errors for the next four points put the Panthers on top for good. Saint Michael's trimmed its deficit to one point twice and was down only 23-20 toward the tail end of the match, but the visitors clinched the victory with back-to-back kills for the final two points,.
The Purple Knights visit 2016 NCAA Tournament qualifier American International College next Friday at 6 p.m. The Yellow Jackets advanced to last year's NCAA Tournament Elite Eight as the East Region champion.
