COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team fell Friday evening to the regionally-ranked University of New Haven, 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 28-26), in the Ross Sports Center during Northeast-10 Conference action.
The Purple Knights are 1-17 overall and 1-12 in the NE10. The Chargers, who are ranked second in the latest NCAA East Region rankings, improved to 19-7 and 13-0 as the NE10 leader. They won last year's NE10 Championship and have qualified for 31 of the last 34 NCAA Tournaments, including the past 11.
Junior Gabby Ratte (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) collected six kills and six digs for the hosts, senior McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) posted three kills and three blocks, while sophomore Allie Statile (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) had five kills. Junior Sarah Rodgers (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) posted 13 helpers and eight digs, first-year Katy Konow (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) turned in seven assists and seven digs, and sophomore Jordan Dean (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) had four kills and six digs. Senior Julia Colasanti (Northville, Mich./Northville) notched 14 digs to increase her career total to 773, pushing her past Heather Frame '04 (764) to take over 15th in program history.
Junior Kristine Rios nearly posted a triple-double with nine kills, 22 assists, and 17 digs for the Chargers as senior Caroline Martins notched 11 kills and eight digs. First-year Angela Chan had 13 helpers and seven digs while junior Lindsey Kim added 15 digs.
The Purple Knights trailed 6-4 before the Chargers went on a 6-1 run to jump ahead 12-5 in the first set. Saint Michael's tallied seven of the next 11 points to trail 16-12, including an ace each from sophomore Tanner Barton (Hudson Falls, N.Y./Hudson Falls), McNamara, and Rodgers. Three different New Haven players had a kill to begin a set-ending 9-2 run.
The Purple Knights held their first lead of the match at 3-2 early in the second set with two Charger attack errors and a Dean kill. New Haven scored three straight points before Saint Michael's recorded kills from Statile and Dean to tie it at 5-5. The Chargers went on to end the set on a 20-5 run.
Ratte had two kills as the Purple Knights went up 3-0 to open the third set and led by four points on three different occasions. After another Ratte kill, Saint Michael's was up 14-11 before New Haven went on a 5-2 run to tie the set at 16. The Chargers later notched a 5-0 run to go ahead 22-18 with two consecutive kills by Martins. Still down four, Saint Michael's went on a 5-1 run to tie it at 24-24 on Dean's ace. After a Saint Michael's attack error, kills by Statile and Barton pushed the Purple and Gold ahead, 26-25. However, the Chargers notched the final three points on two kills and a service ace.
The Purple Knights close out their season tomorrow against regionally-ranked Southern Connecticut State University at 1 p.m. The Owls sit eighth in the latest NCAA East Region rankings.
