Duffy Field

HISTORY
The Christopher M. Duffy Artificial Turf Field hosted its first Saint Michael's sporting event on Aug. 31, 2005, before being officially dedicated on Oct. 22, 2005. Construction began and was completed during the summer of 2005 on the $1 million synthetic turf field, and was made possible due to a generous lead gift by John and Kathleen Duffy, parents of Kevin Duffy ’03, a four-year member of the Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse team. The gift was made in memory of Kevin’s older brother, Christopher, who died during the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. John Duffy has been a member of the Saint Michael’s Board of Trustees, and also served on the Visions Campaign Steering Committee.

In the summer of 2015, the field received a new state-of-the-art synthetic surface, Legion 46, through Shaw Sports Turf (Calhoun, Ga.). The College was the first among 15 institutions in the Northeast-10 Conference to utilize Shaw to install Legion turf. Legion 46's dual-fiber technology is designed to make the turf ideal for field hockey, lacrosse and soccer. CushionFall Sport supplied the rubber infill, which is an eco-friendly product.

In summer 2022, Iowa-based Musco Lighting raised four permanent light towers on Duffy Field, providing the College its first lighted outdoor athletics venue suited for night competition and training. On Sept. 9, 2022, field hockey played the initial outdoor home night game in the history of Saint Michael's Athletics.

FAST FACTS
The synthetic turf field, which is located in the Doc Jacobs Field Complex, measures 370 feet by 220 feet. Metal bleachers line the far sideline adjacent to the baseball field, while the close sideline - which borders a natural grass field, the former home of the field hockey team - has team benches and shelters, and a mobile scoring shelter for gameday staff. An electronic scoreboard is in the corner nearest to the 300s Townhouses.

The turf is situated in the same location of an old grass field that was used by men's and women's lacrosse and soccer between 1989 and 2005.
