POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving squads split decisions on Saturday against Clarkson University in Fuller Pool, with the 3-1 women claiming a 124-101 victory over the 1-2 Golden Knights. The 1-2 men dropped a 132-99 decision to the 2-1 hosts.
Sophomore Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) won three events, including placing first in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:32.69 and during the 100-meter backstroke at 1:07.82, edging out second-place senior Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) in the latter by just 0.19 seconds. McNall also led off for the top 400-meter medley relay quartet, joining senior Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth), junior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption) and sophomore Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) for a time of 4:47.82.
Brady won the 50-meter freestyle at 29.88, while Wiesner captured the 100-meter butterfly in 1:11.39, followed by second-place senior Olivia Hamilton (Bourne, Mass./Bishop Stang). Nadow sided with first-years Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee), Katherine Lecce (Falls Church, Va./Saint Margaret's School) and Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) as the victorious 400 free relay quartet, finishing in 4:32.40. First-year Betsy Portch (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) topped the 800 free field in 10:35.65 while taking second in the 400 free.
Fischang was second in the 200 free at 2:21.70, just 0.36 seconds out of first place, while Brady and Shea were the runners-up in the 100 free and 100 breast, respectively. First-year Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) took second place in both one-meter diving events.
First-year Pierce Farrington (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) won both the 50 (24.70) and 100 (56.95) free races during the men's competition, while senior Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) captured the 400 free in 4:44.94 and finished as the 800 free runner-up. Farrington joined sophomore Cam Thirkell (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) and first-years Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) and Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) to place second in the 400 medley relay.
Both one-meter diving events were swept by Purple Knights, with senior Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) winning each time. His score of 130.90 in the opening event narrowly edged junior Nick Johns (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Anthony's), who took second at 127.70. Johns was also the runner-up in the second event, while senior Nick Youmans (Mountainside, N.J./Governor Livingston) placed third in both.
Carroll took third in the 100 back, Thirkell was third during the 100 fly, and the Purple Knights had the third-place 400 free relay squad. Johns, sophomores Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), and first-year Jacek Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) all completed legs.
The Purple Knights head to in-state rival Norwich University on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
