Women's swimming & diving leads after day one of North Country Invitational

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team led the six-team, two-day North Country Invitational after the opening day concluded on Friday at the State University of New York at Potsdam's Maxcy Hall Pool. With 231 points, the Purple Knights narrowly lead Monroe (N.Y.) Community College (217). The Saint Michael's men are fourth among seven schools, with their 127 points leaving them just 10 shy of third-place SUNY Potsdam. Both Purple Knight squads saw student-athletes win a pair of events on Friday. Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m.

During the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) won with a time of 1:04.17, followed by junior Zoe Doucette (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) in third at 1:05.57 and first-year Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) fourth in 1:06.25. Sophomore Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) won the 200-yard backstroke by touching the wall in 2:07.70. First-year Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was third at 2:19.40, and senior Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) claimed fifth in 2:24.70.

McNall and Wiesner joined senior Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) and junior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial/Assumption) on a pair of runner-up relay quartets. During the 200-yard freestyle, they clocked in at 1:43.84 to lose by just 0.02 seconds while also posting a time of 4:15.58 in the 400-yard medley relay. Shea placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:22.75 and fourth during the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.42, while Brady took third in the 50 free at 26.14, followed by Wiesner in fifth at 26.42.

First-year Betsy Portch (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) was the runner up in the 1,650 free with a time of 19:17.52, and she also nabbed sixth in the 500 free in 5:41.76, coming within 0.01 seconds of fifth.

First-year Pierce Farrington (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) won twice, claiming the 50 free in 21.93 and the 100 fly at 52.48. He came within 0.01 and 0.21 seconds, respectively, of matching his own school records. In the 200 free relay, he sided with senior Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham), sophomore Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) and first-year Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) to take fifth in 1:35.08. Farrington, Kosakowski, Paluso and first-year Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) were fifth in the 400 medley relay at 3:51.66.

Paluso was third in the 100 breast at 1:06.45 and fourth during the 200 IM in 2:10.13. Sophomore Cam Thirkell (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) notched a ninth-place showing in the 200 IM, at 2:13.75, while junior Nick Johns (Seaford, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) finished the 100 breast in 1:10.20, placing 11th and falling 0.13 seconds shy of 10th. Kosakowski was seventh in the 200 back in 2:14.81, and Carroll followed in eighth at 2:15.53.
