Women's swimming & diving wins on final event, downs Saint Lawrence for first time

CANTON, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team clinched what is believed to be its first win ever against Saint Lawrence University, 122-109, by claiming the final event on Sunday in Augsbury Pool. The Purple Knight women are 5-3, while the Saints fall to 3-3. On the men's side, the hosts moved to 2-4 with a 127-114 win, as the visitors dropped to 1-6 after trailing by just seven points heading into the last race.

While carrying a 110-105 edge into the last race, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Saint Michael's needed to win the event to secure the team triumph. Seniors Kim Brady (Morris Township, N.J./Academy of Saint Elizabeth) and Steph Nadow (Charlton, Mass./Saint Peter-Marian) and sophomores Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) finished in a time of 3:49.46 to secure the wins, besting their Saints opponents by 13.56 seconds. The Purple Knights' second foursome of junior Luci Franklin (Steamboat Springs, Colo./Lowell Whiteman School) and first-years Katherine Lecce (Falls Church, Va./Saint Margaret's School), Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and Coral Santos (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) padded the final lead by placing third.

McNall won two other events, including while breaking her own school record in the 200-yard individual medley. Her time of 2:16.58 in that race was 0.17 seconds better than the mark she set on Nov. 16, 2013. Junior Julie Shea (Peabody, Mass./Peabody Veterans Memorial) took second. McNall also won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.16, with Nadow second.

Brady won the 50 free at 25.92, with Wiesner third in 26.74, just 0.07 seconds out of second, and Wiesner claimed the 100 free by touching the wall in 56.42, with Brady second. Shea won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.10. Nadow, Shea, sophomore Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) and first-year Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) combined to take second in the 400-yard medley relay.

Fischang nabbed second place in both the 200 and 500 free races, while first-year Betsy Portch (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) took second in the 1,000 free and third during the 500 free. Classmate Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) was the runner up in one-meter diving, falling 10.65 points shy of the winner, and senior Emily Asch (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) was third. In the 100-yard butterfly, senior Olivia Hamilton (Bourne, Mass./Bishop Stang) was third, Murphy finished 0.17 seconds later, and Santos was 0.29 ticks short of Murphy.

First-year Pierce Farrington (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) won three times for the men, including breaking his own two-month-old school mark in the 50 free, clocking in at 21.87 to trim the record by 0.05 ticks. Farrington also claimed the 100 free race in 49.07 and the 100 breast event in 1:02.52.

Senior Nathan Paluso (Windham, Maine/Windham) won the 200 IM in 2:11.25 and was third during the 100 breast while helping a 400 medley relay foursome to victory in 4:01.03. In that event, he joined sophomores Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Cam Thirkell (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) and first-year Joe Carroll (Andover, Mass./Andover) in victory. Thirkell was second in the 100 fly, followed by sophomore Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) in third, while Butler was third in the 100 free.

First-year Zach Kosakowski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) was second in the 100 back, followed by Carroll in third, and Kosakowski took third during the 200 IM. Classmate Jacek Deptula (Haskell, N.J./Paramus Catholic) placed third in the 50 free and 200 free, first-year Jake Fox (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) took third in the 500 free, and classmate Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) was third in the 1,000 free.

During relays, Andersen, Carroll, Deptula and Kosakowski combined to place second in the 400 free relay, with Fox, Thirkell, senior Joe Vo (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and junior Sean Faust (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) finishing third.
