Regionally-Ranked Men's Tennis Loses Decision to Division I Merrimack

NASHUA, N.H. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's tennis team lost to Division I Merrimack College, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Longfellow Tennis & Swim Club. The Purple Knights were ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll.

THE ACTION
  • All three doubles contests ended with 6-3 results, as Merrimack won a pair to claim the match's first point.
  • Barroso and Du Plessis won four of the final five games at No. 2 for the Purple Knights' victory.
  • In the top spot, sophomores Simon Lundholm (Le Luc, France/CNED) and Julius van den Broek (Bergschenhoek, The Netherlands/Wolfert Lyceum) led 2-1 before yielding five of the final six games. At No. 3, senior Jackson Moser (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) and first-year Garrett Brooker (Charleston, S.C./Oceanside Collegiate Academy) lost for only the fifth time in 14 decisions.
  • Merrimack took a 2-0 lead when Lundholm lost at No. 2 singles, but Barroso swept to a 6-3, 6-3 victory in the fifth spot to halve the deficit.
  • Du Plessis lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1, and Brooker's 6-3, 7-5 loss at No. 6 allowed Merrimack to clinch the win.
  • Moser and van den Broek both dropped three-set contests. In the third spot, Moser led 5-4 in his opening set before falling, ultimately forcing a third set during a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 loss. Van den Broek handily won his first set in an eventual 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 setback.
