Regionally-Ranked Men's Tennis Loses to No. 47 Adelphi, 5-2

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's tennis team's season concluded on Tuesday with a 5-2 loss to 47th-ranked Adelphi University during Northeast-10 Conference play at the SMC Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights were ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Region poll, while the Panthers were 47th nationally and sixth in the East according to the ITA.
 
Saint Michael's honored senior Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) as part of the Purple Knights' Senior Day match.

MATCH NOTES
  • With 24 wins this year between singles and doubles, Barroso tied former teammate Jason Boucher's '23 twice-set program record.
THE ACTION
  • Adelphi swept doubles by the narrowest of margins. Barroso and Du Plessis lost only 6-4 at No. 1, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to lead 3-2 and 4-3 before falling.
  • The Purple Knights went to tiebreakers in the other two matches, with Brooker and first-year Ruben Weijer (Son, Noord-Brabant, The Netherlands/Frits Philips Lyceum) overcoming a 5-2 deficit in the tiebreaker at No. 3 before winning the next three points during an eventual 7-6 (7-5) setback.
  • In the second spot, senior Jackson Moser (Missouri City, Texas/Ridge Point) and sophomore Julius van den Broek (Bergschenhoek, The Netherlands/Wolfert Lyceum) were down 5-2 before rallying to force a tiebreaker. Down 6-3, Moser served for the next two points, but Adelphi closed out a 7-6 (7-5) win with the next point.
  • The Panthers took a 2-0 lead when first-year Jack Li (San Diego, Calif./San Marcos) lost a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 2 singles, and Du Plessis followed with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 setback in the top spot.
  • Barroso ground out a 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 victory at No. 4, but van den Broek took a 6-4, 6-4 defeat in the third spot to yield Adelphi the clinching point.
  • Brooker picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6, and Moser closed the match with a 7-5, 6-2 loss in the fifth spot.
