Softball Caps Regular Season with Losses at Southern Connecticut State

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College softball team capped the regular season by losing both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University, 3-2 in eight innings and 6-2, on Sunday at Pelz Field. The Purple Knights open NE10 Championship play on Tuesday at Pace University.

THE ACTION
  • Devens singled home Edgerly in the top of the first inning, but the Purple Knights left at least one runner on base in every inning, including two in the fourth.
  • Parker stranded two Owls in the home half of the fourth before DeLutri tied the game in the sixth with a squeeze bunt.
  • With two down in the seventh, first-year Sophia Underfer (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Indian Hills) knocked a pinch-hit single the other way before Devens walked, but Lewis induced an inning-ending lineout.
  • Nickerson's infield single with two out in the top of the eighth pushed home first-year Maddy Booska (Burlington, Vt./Colchester) with the go-ahead run.
  • All four Owls that batted in the home half picked up hits, as Ingersoll's RBI double tied the game before DeLutri delivered a walk-off single.

  • Austin led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run before Cestari's solo homer an inning later made it 2-0.
  • Booska came through with a tying two-run single with two down in the fourth inning.
  • The Owls went ahead with four runs on four hits in the sixth, taking the lead on Correra's two-run single. Austin and Miller later added RBI.

  • Tuesday at Pace, 2 p.m. in NE10 Championship first round.
  • The eighth-seeded Purple Knights need two wins over the top-seeded Setters that day to advance, while Pace needs one win to move on.
