SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College
men's ice hockey team (8-11-4, 7-10-4 ECAC East) beat
Castleton State College (3-16-3, 1-12-3 ECAC East), 7-3, on
Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena in ECAC East action.
For the Spartans, freshman Ross Carmichael (Jacobstown,
N.J./Tri-State Selects EmpJHL) scored a goal and added an
assist, while classmate Jay Seals (Alma, Mich./Port
Colborne GHL) stopped eight shots in net.
For the Purple Knights, senior Alex Watts
(Cheshire,
Conn./Berkshire
School) tallied a pair of goals
and assists, and junior Jared Silver
(Montreal,
Quebec/Tabor
Academy) scored twice and added
an assist, as senior Nick Dancey
(Anaheim,
Calif./American International)
helped on three goals. Junior Derek Jackson (Clinton,
N.Y./Gunnery School) made 23 saves, meanwhile, en route to
his seventh win of the season.
Castleton State jumped out on top early, when sophomore
Travis Martell (Kelowna, British Columbia /MSU
Bottineau) scored on the Spartans' first shot on
goal, at the 8:38 mark, with assists credited to freshmen
Ryan Bartlett (Brunswick, Maine/Portland AtJHL)
and Andy Brolsma (Syracuse, N.Y./Buffalo OPJHL),
and entered the first intermission with their first ever lead over
the Purple Knights.
Watts evened the score 5:48 into the second period
with help from Silver, who put the Purple Knights
up for good six minutes later with a power play goal off of assists
from Watts and senior Jonathan Perez
(Sherman Oaks, Calif./Berkshire School), who also scored
the game winner.
With Craig Geregosian's (North Andover, Mass./Valley
Jr. Warriors) assist on Silver's
second goal at 15:46 of the third period, four Purple Knights
seniors notched points in what would be the final regular season
contest at Cairns Arena for five players: Nick
Dancey, Geregosian, David Mullins
(Montreal, Quebec/Governor Dummer),
Perez, and Watts, who were
honored prior to the contest.
Saint Michael's will travel to Colby College on Friday for a
7 p.m. match-up, while Castleton State will play Western New
England on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
