WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team (8-6, 6-5 Northeast-10 Conference) won its season-high fourth straight game on Wednesday, 57-49, at the University of New Haven.
Senior Marilyn Ferreira (New London, N.H./Kearsarge Regional) scored a career-high 12 points and added four assists to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Purple Knights. Junior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) added 12 points and five rebounds, while senior Logan Pintka (Schenectady, N.Y./Colonie Central) tallied 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
For New Haven (2-14, 1-11 NE-10), Lauren Boivin had a team-best nine points and added six rebounds.
Saint Michael's trailed for the majority of the contest, as the Chargers led for the final eight minutes of the first half, and the first 14 minutes of the second period. New Haven's lead was 46-39 with 9:34 to go following a Boivin lay-up, but the Chargers then went scoreless for the next 6:45. Saint Michael's took full advantage, as the Purple Knights went on a game-changing 14-0 run to turn the seven-point deficit into a seven-point advantage, 53-46, following a Pintka layup with 3:16 remaining.
Neither team shot well, with Saint Michael's making just 34 percent of its field goals (17-of-50), and New haven 31 percent (15-of-48). Two big advantages for the Purple Knights were rebounding (44-34 edge) and free throws (19-of-28 for Saint Michael's, 12-of-26 for New Haven).
Saint Michael's returns to action on Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. home game versus Assumption College at the Ross Sports Center.
