MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team (6-8-1, 4-6-1 ECAC East) lost its second road game in as many days on Saturday, falling at Wesleyan University, 6-2.
Senior Matt Rigtrup (Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) tallied a goal and an assist for the Purple Knights, while sophomore Justin Castagna (Los Alamitos, Calif./Los Angeles Kings) also scored in the loss. Senior Alex Higgins (Phoenix, Ariz./Kent School) earned an assist, while classmate Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) stopped 29 shots.
For Wesleyan (5-6-3, 4-5-1 NESCAC), Geoff Mucha scored twice, while Anthony DePietto, Don Kleckner, Derek Collins and Adam Kaiser netted a goal apiece. Micah Ehiorobo handed out two assists, while in net, Glenn Stowell turned aside 30-of-32 shots.
Wesleyan took control with two goals in a 44-second span midway through the opening period, including Mucha's power-play tally. Saint Michael's was undone by five penalities in the frame, compared to just two for Wesleyan.
The Cardinals scored the lone goal of the second period, a goal that proved to be the game-winner. Castagna's power-play strike pulled the Purple Knights to within 3-1 5:18 into the final period, but just 27 seconds later, Wesleyan struck again, quickly restoring its three-goal lead.
Saint Michael's again pulled to within two with 10:24 remaining on Rigtrup's unassisted tally, but two Wesleyan even-strength scores later in the frame sealed the home win for the Cardinals.
Saint Michael's will look to bounce back on Friday with a 7 p.m. home game versus Babson College at Cairns Arena in South Burlington.
