Men's golf turns in best showing at regional championship since 1997

BREWSTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's golf team capped its season on Tuesday by turning in its best New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship finish since 1997, tying for 20th among 34 schools at The Captains Golf Course.

Squads from Division I, II and III institutions competed at the meet, which closed a season that also saw the Purple Knights record their best Northeast-10 Conference Championship showing in 11 years. Saint Michael's fired 641 shots during the two-day competition, tying NE-10 counterpart Southern New Hampshire University. Bentley University won the meet, with 606 strokes, while the Purple Knights tied for sixth among Division II programs.

In his final collegiate competition, senior John Goodwin (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kent School) fired a 75 to improve upon his day-one showing by seven shots, ultimately tying for 48th with a 157. In a tightly-bunched field, he was just four shots short of the top 15. Classmate Chris LaPolice (Stamford, Conn./Trinity Catholic) was two strokes behind, as his 159 tied for 64th.

Junior Nicholas Angelo (Sutton, Mass./Saint John's) shot a 161, and sophomore Steve French (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown Area) trimmed four shots off his Monday score to card an 82 en route to finishing the tournament at 168. Junior Dylan Lavallee (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial) was the Purple Knights' fifth golfer.
