Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College and Saint Anselm College women's basketball teams won for the second time this weekend during the final day of the Purple Knights' 28th DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic on Sunday in the Ross Sports Center. The hosts downed Dominican (N.Y.) College, 61-44, while Saint Anselm picked up a 62-41 victory against Queens (N.Y.) College.
Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) notched a double-double to lead Saint Michael's (3-2), posting 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. Classmate Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) also went 6-of-9 en route to 15 points, and senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) turned in 14 points.
Sophomore KC Jentzen (Pearl River, N.Y./Nanuet) totaled a game-best 20 points off the Dominican (0-3) bench, shooting 9-for-12, and senior Marley Klunk (York, Pa./Red Lion Senior) totaled 12 points and nine rebounds.
The hosts yielded the opening bucket before netting the next eight points, with Olsen scoring two buckets and assisting another. A lay-up by Adach made it 18-5 with 9:14 remaining in the first stanza, as the Purple Knights held the Chargers to 2-of-14 shooting to open the game. Klunk's jumper brought her team within 21-14 at 3:45, but Saint Michael's thrice pushed its advantage back to 11, including 29-18 by halftime on an Adach buzzer-beater.
Dominican rallied to produce a 32-24 score during the opening stages of the second half, but an ensuing 12-2 Purple Knight run put the hosts on top by 18 at 11:51, and they never again led by fewer than 14 points.
In the first contest of the day, junior Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H./Dover) had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Saint Anselm (5-0), hitting three three-pointers while grabbing seven rebounds. Senior Epiphany Smith (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) added 10 points. Sophomore Nicole Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem North) notched 17 points behind three threes for Queens (0-5).
Senior Cadie Chu's (Bellerose, N.Y./Bayside) jumper gave Queens a 12-10 edge at the 9:59 mark of the opening half before the Hawks scored the next 18 points by 3:39. Saint Anselm turned in four three-point possessions in that time, with Smith twice knocking down three-pointers. The Hawks held a 33-20 lead at halftime before their advantage ballooned to 22 points, at 48-26, with 10:22 remaining in the contest. The Chargers twice chipped their deficit to 14, including when Caggiano's lay-up made it 53-39 at 3:08, but Queens came no closer.
The Purple Knights next host the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. Northeast-10 Conference contest.
