Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) scored nine of her 14 points during a game-changing 18-0 run during the second half, sending the Saint Michael's College women's basketball team past the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, 69-53, on Tuesday during a Northeast-10 Conference contest in the Ross Sports Center.
The Purple Knights are now 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the league, having taken nine of their last 11 meets with the River Hawks. The visitors slipped to 1-3 and 0-2.
Hennessy's 14 points came on 5-of-7 shooting, and she also turned in a game-best seven assists. Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) recorded a double-double with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds, and she hit all five free throw attempts to lead the team's 13-of-15 showing from the charity stripe. Sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting off the bench.
Senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) notched nine points and nine rebounds, moving alone into fifth place in program history with 128 career three-pointers, and junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) had nine points. Sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) finished with eight rebounds and three blocks. Saint Michael's shot 52 percent while holding the River Hawks to 31.4 percent.
Junior Brianna Wilson (Lowell, Mass./Lowell/Salem State) led all scorers with 20 points for UMass Lowell, shooting 10-for-16 and snagging nine boards, including six offensive. However, her teammates were a combined 12-of-54. Sophomore Danielle DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass./Tewksbury) added eight points.
Two straight buckets by Wilson gave the River Hawks a 44-40 edge with 11:44 remaining in the second half, but the lead was wiped out by 10:40 on Adach's second consecutive hoop, and Adach eventually scored the first six points to spark the 18-0 run. Hennessy scored nine of 10 straight Purple Knight points at one juncture in the run, and Olsen's lay-up at 5:43 made it 58-44. Saint Michael's held UMass Lowell to 0-of-9 shooting during the run while forcing three turnovers, never again leading by fewer than 12 points.
The Purple Knights broke out of a 2-2 game with the next six points, including four by Adach, and led for the remainder of the opening stanza. Saint Michael's never led by more than eight, as Wilson helped the visitors stay close, at one point netting four straight UMass Lowell buckets. The River Hawks twice drew within two, including at 12-10, prior to the hosts pushing their advantage to 20-12 on a Hennessy three at 11:48.
Saint Michael's held a 30-27 edge at halftime, shooting 52 percent after starting the game by making nine of its first 11 attempts. Deroy had eight points off the bench for the Purple Knights. Wilson scored 12 points for the hosts, shooting 6-for-10 while her teammates went 6-for-25.
The Purple Knights break for Thanksgiving before returning to action Sunday, hosting nationally-ranked Franklin Pierce University at 1:30 p.m. The Ravens stand 17th in this week's USA TODAY ESPN national poll.
