Box Score COLCHESTER, Vt. - Senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) hit all 11 free throw tries, including the go-ahead freebie with 3:18 left, to finish with 19 points and a career-best seven steals, lifting the Saint Michael's College women's basketball team past Le Moyne College, 63-60, on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center. Junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) added 10 points and a career-best seven steals, as the Purple Knights totaled 20 steals off of 32 turnovers.
While playing their only home game between Jan. 18 and Feb. 7, the Purple Knights improved to 9-10 overall and 6-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. Twenty-two of the 33 all-time meetings have been decided by seven points or less, as the Dolphins slipped to 6-13 and 3-12 despite beginning the game 8-of-11 from three-point range.
Classmate Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) added 17 points, and sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) tallied 11 points and eight rebounds. Hennessy was 4-of-6 from the floor, while Olsen shot 3-of-4, including 2-for-2 from three. The Purple Knights were 25-of-31 from the charity stripe.
Le Moyne went 8-of-17 from downtown, with senior Morgan Rowland (Latham, N.Y./Shaker/Delaware State) hitting three triples en route to 13 points. Classmate Emma Cronk (Parham, Ontario/Sydenham/Binghamton) added 13 points, sophomore Maddy McKnight (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) had 11, and senior Katie Hart (Constantia, N.Y./Central Square/Canisius) turned in eight rebounds.
After leading by as many as 13 points, the hosts saw the Dolphins grab the lead on a Cronk hoop at 9:47 of the second half, making the score 47-46, and the teams played through four ties and six lead changes down the stretch. Between 10:52 and 1:27, neither team led by more than three points.
With her team down by a 58-57 count, Hennessy knocked down two free throws at 3:18 to give Saint Michael's the final lead, sparking a 6-0 run. A Le Moyne hoop produced a three-point margin with 1:05 left, and with the visitors in possession with less than five seconds remaining, Olsen forced a final turnover.
The hosts trailed by as many as three points early before forging ahead on Hennessy's bucket at 14:43, which put her team up 11-10. Le Moyne later trailed just 16-15 at 10:35, but the Purple Knights put together a 10-0 run during a 2:34 stretch. Four different players scored as six of the points came from the charity stripe.
The Dolphins netted the next seven points in a matter of 1:18, but a 9-0 Saint Michael's run ensued, with Adach knocking down a three at 3:57 to make it 35-22. The Purple Knights led 36-27 at halftime.
Saint Michael's head to the University of Massachusetts at Lowell on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
