Box Score MANCHESTER, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team limited one of the top three-point shooting teams in the Northeast-10 Conference to one three-pointer on Thursday, holding Saint Anselm College to 24 points fewer than its season average during a 52-39 victory at Stoutenburgh Gym.
The Purple Knights moved back to .500 at 6-6 while improving to 3-5 in the league, as the Hawks slipped to 9-5 and 3-5. Saint Michael's also held a 35-25 rebounding advantage and yielded 30.6-percent shooting to a team that entering the contest averaging 63.5 points. Saint Anselm was 1-for-16 from three-point range after coming into the night just one three-pointer shy of the league lead.
Senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) went 4-of-7 from three-point range en route to tallying a game-high-tying 14 points for the visitors, while junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) matched her with 14 points, shooting 4-for-5 from the floor and 6-of-7 on free throws. The Purple Knights were 10-for-11 on freebies. Sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) notched a game-best seven rebounds.
Senior Megan Howard (Saint Paul, Minn./Central) had 10 points to lead Saint Anselm, while junior Curran Leighton (Dover, N.H./Dover) added six rebounds and four assists off the bench.
The Purple Knights pushed out to a 6-2 lead, yielding only the two points during the opening 5:57, before Saint Anselm countered with a go-ahead 6-0 run, but Adach had seven points during a 19-4 run that gave the visitors the lead for good. Quinn canned two threes in that stretch, while sophomore Cara Deroy (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) dropped in a lay-up at 3:50 to provide a 25-12 advantage. Saint Michael's led 27-18 at the half.
The Hawks came as close as seven points four times in the second stanza, including at 36-29 with 9:26 remaining on sophomore Ashley Viselli's (Groveland, Mass./Pentucket Regional) hoop, but Adach countered with a bucket, and Quinn later drained another triple to put her team ahead by double figures, 41-30, at 7:18. Viselli again made it a seven-point game at 6:05, but Quinn scored five points and junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) four during an ensuing 9-0 spurt.
Saint Michael's continues its three-game road swing on Saturday at Adelphi University at 1:30 p.m.
