Women's hoops falls before buzzer, downed by Adelphi in 60-58 NE-10 loss

Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - Adelphi University sophomore Sade Jackson (Hackensack, N.J./Aquinas) dropped in a tie-breaking bucket just before the buzzer on Saturday, as the hosts downed the Saint Michael's College women's basketball team, 60-58, during a Northeast-10 Conference contest in the Center for Recreation and Sports.

The Purple Knights are now 6-7 overall and 3-6 in the league, as six of their losses have been by nine points or fewer, with four by six or less. The Panthers are 6-7 and 4-5, winning for the fourth time in five games.

Junior Nicole Adach (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) had 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks for the visitors, while senior Coreen Hennessy (Chatham, N.H./Fryeburg Academy) added 14 points and three steals. Junior Megan Olsen (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) turned in eight points, six boards and three steals off the bench, sophomore Alexa Long (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) tacked on nine points, and senior Samantha Steinmetz (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley) provided six caroms and three steals.

Senior Amanda Campusano (Bronx, N.Y./Dewitt Clinton/Guilford Technical C.C.) went 5-for-10 on three-pointers while providing 20 points for Adelphi, and Jackson finished her day with 10 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Kitrys (Parlin, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) notched 16 points and eight boards, and freshman Kelly Mannix (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) tallied 10 points.

Olsen dropped in a lay-up with 2:37 remaining to put the Purple Knights ahead by a 58-51 count, but Adelphi finished the game with nine straight points. Jackson turned a steal into a quick tying hoop with 36 seconds to go, and she grabbed a rebound off her own miss with less than two ticks left before making the winning bucket.

The teams went back and forth throughout, as Saint Michael's scored the first four points, yielded the next eight, then countered with the next eight to grab a 12-8 edge on two Olsen free throws at 9:43 of the opening half. In all, the teams played through 11 lead changes and seven ties. Down 23-21 with fewer than three minutes to go in the half, the Purple Knights scored the next eight points, with Long providing the final five.

The visitors held a 31-25 advantage at halftime, only to allow the opening seven points of the second stanza to the Panthers. A pair of Hennessy buckets keyed a later 10-2 run, which put Saint Michael's on top, 41-34, at 14:31, before Jackson notched the final four points of a tying 7-0 stretch. With fewer than six minutes remaining, senior Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) broke the game's 10th tie with a three-pointer, sparking a 9-2 run that helped the visitors push in front, 58-51, which Olsen capped with her hoop before Adelphi rallied.

The Purple Knights complete their three-game road trip on Wednesday at Southern Connecticut State University at 5:30 p.m.
