LYME CENTER, N.H./STOWE, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College skiing teams completed the Dartmouth College Carnival on Saturday by finishing 10th out of 15 institutions. The Purple Knights totaled 290 points, coming within 50 of ninth-place Harvard University during a carnival whose Alpine portion occurred at the Dartmouth Skiway and Nordic races took place at the Trapp Family Lodge. The University of Vermont won, with 982 points.
In the men's slalom, freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) took 15th out of 74 varsity collegiate starters with a cumulative two-run time of 1:34.80, finishing 0.27 seconds out of the top 10. His second run of 46.54 was the fifth-best showing in the competition. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Reistad, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 29th in 1:37.59, and senior Nathan Bryant (Lee, N.H./Oyster River) placed 36th.
Junior Gabbi Hall (San Anselmo, Calif./Forest Charter School) was 28th out of 68 in the women's slalom, clocking in at 1:44.41 by shaving 4.51 seconds off of her opening run, finishing in 49.95. Sophomore Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) put together a 1:48.50 showing, and classmate Kerstin Middleton (Greenland, N.H./Proctor Academy) was the Purple Knights' third scorer.
During Nordic action, senior Robert Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) finished 1:02.26.6 in the men's 20k classic mass start, while junior Colin Delaney (Lake Placid, N.Y./National Sports Academy) was at 1:03.43.0. Freshman Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) recorded third-place points for Saint Michael's.
In the women's 15k classic mass start, sophomore Gabrielle Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine/Fort Kent Community) crossed the finish line in 54:56.9, while freshman Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) was less than a second behind. Senior Sam Martell (Georgia, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Saint Lawrence) was third for her team.
The Purple Knights head to the Williams College Carnival next weekend, beginning on Friday.
