HANCOCK, Mass./WOODFORD, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College skiing teams received 73 points from the men's Alpine squad on Friday during the first day of the Williams College Carnival, as the Purple Knights are in ninth place heading into day two. Nordic races were canceled for Friday.
Saint Michael's has 105 points in a 13-team field, which is being paced by Dartmouth College and its 191 points. The carnival finishes up on Saturday, as the Alpine portion is being held in Massachusetts at the Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort, while Nordic will be contested in Vermont at the Prospect Mountain Nordic Ski Center.
The slalom was run on Friday, with the giant slalom being pushed back to Saturday. Freshman Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) finished ninth among 73 varsity collegiate starters thanks to continuing his trend of turning in strong second runs. He clocked in with the second-best time, 45.03, during his second trek down the mountain, coming within 0.08 seconds of the leader from Middlebury College. His two-run combined showing was 1:31.17. Sophomore Carl-Oscar Bredengen (Reistad, Noway/Donski Alpine) took 26th in 1:34.80, while senior JD Levine (Toronto, Ontario/National Ski Academy) nabbed a 28st-place finish at 1:35.32.
Sophomore Kerstin Middleton (Greenland, N.H./Proctor Academy) paced the women during the slalom, finishing in 1:48.00, while senior Ashley Langlands (Shelburne, N.H./Gorham) was 0.30 seconds behind. Sophomore Shannon Conroy (Auburn, Calif./Home Schooled) was the third Saint Michael's scorer.
