Box Score

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team opened its 2013-14 campaign with a 5-0 loss to national power Norwich University on Friday evening in Cairns Arena, as each team kicked off its Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East slate. The Cadets, who are No. 3 in the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll and have advanced to at least the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament each of last four years, moved to 2-0 on the year.

Junior Dave Donzanti (West Chester, Pa./Northfield Mount Hermon) made a career-high 37 saves for the Purple Knights before sophomore Michael Comitini (Hudson, Quebec/Cornwall Colts) had nine in 12:30 of relief.

Senior Chris Duszynski (Okotoks, Alberta/Okotoks Oilers) paced the visitors with two goals and an assist, classmate Shane Gorman (Trumbull, Conn./The Gunnery) had a goal and three assists, and junior Corey Hale (Montreal, Quebec/Tilton School) and sophomore Ryan Whitell (Calgary, Alberta/Weyburn Red Wings) also scored. Senior Travis Janke (Swift Current, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame Hounds) added three helpers, and junior Matic Marinsek (Ljubljana, Slovenia/HK Olimpija II) posted four saves.

Donzanti made four stops in the opening five minutes of a scoreless game before Saint Michael's earned a power-play opportunity just 5:08 into their season, but the hosts were unable to send any shots on goal. Three more Donzanti stops were followed by a pair of Duszynski goals just 2:44 apart, at 9:55 and 12:39. Gorman and Janke assisted each.

With Norwich up 2-0 during the second period, the Purple Knights headed on a power play at 8:15, but Gorman took a Janke pass and netted a short-handed marker at 9:06 to create a 3-0 lead for the visitors. Whitell and Hale tacked on power-play markers 4:21 apart in the third period, at 3:09 and 7:30, with Hale's coming during a 5-on-3 advantage.

Saint Michael's heads to the University of New England next Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
