SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team snapped a seven-game losing streak to Skidmore College on Saturday afternoon, as it skated to a 2-2 tie in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action at Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights are now 0-7-1 overall and 0-6-1 in league play, while the Thoroughbreds, who took No. 5 Norwich University to overtime on Friday night, are now 3-4-4 and 1-4-3.
Junior Jeremy Wong (Montreal, Quebec/Tilton School) and first-year Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) each scored for the Purple Knights, while junior AJ Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) dished out an assist. Classmate Dave Donzanti (West Chester, Pa./Northfield Mount Hermon) had 29 saves while his team outshot the visitors 38-31, including a 22-10 advantage in the third period.
Thoroughbred seniors Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wis./Lake Forest Academy) and Brad Schuler (Delran, N.J./Hamilton Red Wings) both scored, while first-year Jack McDonald (King City, Ontario/Saint Andrews School) stopped 36 shots.
Two point-blank shots by senior Vlad Gavrik (Kharkiv, Ukraine/Hebron Academy) were saved by Donzanti a little more than three minutes into the opening period. However, Dickman gave the Purple Knights the lead 8:30 into the first stanza as he tracked down a loose puck in the offensive zone, skated in alone and then backhanded a shot through the legs of McDonald. Skidmore tied the game at 6:22 of the second period on a goal by Schuler. After coincidental minors were assessed to each team with 1:06 remaining in the period, Beck gave Skidmore the lead nine seconds later. The Purple Knights came back and knotted the game early in the third frame, with Wong knocking in a rebound at 3:33 after Pieprzak's shot was saved. During the overtime period, Donzanti turned away all six shots he faced to keep the score tied.
The Purple Knights return to action on Jan. 3, as they travel to face Middlebury College, which is ranked 11th in the most recent D3hockey.com national poll, at 7 p.m. as part of the Middlebury Holiday Classic.
