Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team fell twice on Sunday, opening the season with an 8-0 loss in five innings to the University of Bridgeport and a 5-1 setback to 20th-ranked Molloy College during the National Training Center Spring Games.

In the opener, sophomore Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) knocked a double for Saint Michael's, and junior Laura McCormack (Natick, Mass./Natick) yielded three earned runs in three innings to take the setback. First-year Judi Barcavage (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) drew a base on balls.

Sophomore Katelyn Wall (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) led 2-3 Bridgeport by going 3-for-3 with two runs and a double, and first-year Jennine Walsh (Langley, British Columbia/Walnut Grove) yielded the one hit over five frames while striking out six.

As the visiting team, Bridgeport scored once in the first inning before plating two more on a pair of second-inning hits. A two-run single from first-year Paige Owens (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) keyed a three-run third, when each run was unearned to provide a 6-0 score. Bridgeport made it 8-0 in the fourth before Murray doubled with one down in the home half for the lone Purple and Gold hit.

In the nightcap, senior Lindsay Houston (Concord, N.H./Concord) and junior Brittany Regis (Monroe, N.H./Saint Johnsbury Academy) both picked up a pair of hits, with Houston adding an RBI, while junior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) doubled. First-year sisters Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) and Katy DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) both picked up their first college hits, while Barcavage scored. Senior Lauren Mercik (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) fanned one while yielding five earned runs in a complete game.

Junior Nicolette Sinagra (Brooklyn, N.Y./New Utrecht) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run for 8-3 Molloy, which is ranked by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Sophomore Victoria Gunnels (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) was 2-for-3 with a run, and first-year Tracey Balinskas (Edison, N.J./Edison) struck out five while tossing all seven innings.

Barcavage walked with one down in the second inning before scoring on Houston's bases-loaded single, but Molloy scored single runs in the second and third to grab an edge before Sinagra's two-out, two-run single put the Lions on top, 4-1, in the fourth. Another RBI hit by Molloy gave the home team a 5-1 advantage in the sixth, and the first two Purple Knights singled in the seventh but did not score.

Saint Michael's takes on a pair of West Virginia-based institutions tomorrow, facing Alderson-Broaddus College at 9 a.m. and West Liberty University at 11 a.m.
