LOWELL, Mass./EASTON, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team split a pair of Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division contests on Sunday, falling at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, 11-1, in five innings at River View Field before picking up a 7-3 win over Stonehill College at Gartland Field. The Purple Knights move to 2-33 overall and 2-14 in division play, the River Hawks improve to 22-18 and 12-3, and the Skyhawks slip to 21-21 and 8-6.
Sophomore Sarah Murray (Wallingford, Conn./Sheehan) went 1-for-2 with a double, a run and a stolen base for Saint Michael's in game one at UMass Lowell, while senior Brittany Cantore (Saint Johnsbury, Vt./Saint Johnsbury Academy) was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Greer Lemnah (Lyndon Center, Vt./Lyndon Institute) added a hit, and senior Stephanie Frank (Essex, Vt./Essex) took the setback.
Sophomore Abby Jamieson (Billerica, Mass./Austin Prep) was 3-for-3 with four RBIs, a double and a steal for UMass Lowell, while junior Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Three other players had multiple hits, and first-year Marielle Handley (Durham, Conn./Copinchaug Regional) gave up three hits in a complete-game win.
The Rivers Hawks struck for two runs in the first inning, seven more in the second, and two in the third. In the fifth frame, Murray led off the inning with a double to center field before stealing third with two outs. Cantore singled to left field to plate Murray before the hosts recorded a game-ending fielder's choice.
Against Stonehill, first-year Danielle DelGreco (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was 3-for-4 and drove in a season-best five runs, while Lemnah and junior Bethany Falls (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) each went 2-for-4 and scored. Frank notched a hit, four runs, two walks and a stolen base, senior Lindsay Houston (Concord, N.H./Concord) had a hit and a steal, and Cantore and junior Amanda Brigante (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) each finished with a hit. First-year Jessica Niles (Chaumont, N.Y./General Brown) allowed five hits and three earned runs during a complete game to notch her first college win.
Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) had a home run and drove in three runs for Stonehill, while classmate Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 2-for-3. First-year Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) worked four innings and took the loss.
After a scoreless first inning, Frank and Murray came around to score to give Saint Michael's a 2-0 advantage in the second. The visitors scored again in the fourth frame when DelGreco singled up the middle to score Frank from third. DelGreco added a pair of two-out RBIs in the fifth to extend the Purple Knights' lead to 5-0 before the Skyhawks scored three runs on Eisenmann's homer in the bottom of the inning. Each team had a hit in the sixth frame, and Saint Michael's added two runs on a pair of hits in the seventh. Niles held Stonehill hitless in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win.
The Purple Knights return to the field on Tuesday when they host Southern New Hampshire University at 3:30 p.m.
