Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey capped off a two-game homestand with a 2-0 win against the University of Southern Maine in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action on Saturday at Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights move to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the ECAC East, while the Huskies slide to 1-4 and 0-4. The Purple and Gold also picks up its third straight win against the Huskies, and its seventh in the last nine meetings.
Sophomores Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) and Danny Divis (Media, Pa./Minnesota Wilderness) both scored a goal with assists from juniors Kevin Altidor (Montreal, Quebec/Millbrook School) and Mike Schreiner (Saint Albans, Vt./Norwich). Senior goalie Dave Donzanti (West Chester, Pa./Northfield Mount Hermon) recorded a 14-save shutout for the second clean sheet of his career, tying him for most in program history. Donzanti was also in net the last time that Saint Michael's blanked an opponent back on Nov. 20, 2012 against the State University of New York at Canton. First-year Kyle Shapiro (Ocean, N.J./Walpole Express) collected a season-high 44 saves in the loss.
After Saint Michael's was assessed the game's first penalty, Southern Maine junior Zach Dymock (Dutton, Ontario/National Sports Academy) snapped a shot from the top of the right face-off circle that was turned aside from Donzanti's left toe at 9:15 of the first period. The Purple Knights then clicked off three shots of their own from low in the slot at 14:25, but Shapiro was able to snuff out the trio of shots. After gaining a power-play opportunity, Pieprzak's shot from just below the left circle rang off the crossbar at 16:30.
The Purple Knights' offense continued to remain scoreless after a pair of attackers missed open net opportunities when Shapiro was out of position. Divis broke the scoreless tie when he sent the puck through traffic off Schreiner's face-off win and past Shapiro's glove at 15:19 of the second period. The marker was Divis' third in the last three games. Saint Michael's struck again just 12 seconds later when Dickman punched in the loose puck off a rebound after Shapiro made the initial save on Altidor. Southern Maine was able to muster only one shot after the goals as the visitors finished the second stanza having been outshot, 14-3.
Southern Maine's woes continued into the third period as the team was bested, 20-6, in shots. The Huskies opened the period with the power play, but Donzanti kicked away sophomore Cole Klippenstein's (Franklin, Tenn./North Bay Trappers) blue line slapshot at 3:15. Divis then gave a bid for his second tally of the game at 9:27, but Shapiro squeezed his legs just before the puck crossed over the goal line. After a Southern Maine dump-in to its offensive zone, Shapiro was pulled with 1:26 remaining, but Dymock's shot with 44 seconds to go was the only shot in net. Junior Nick Potter (Stoneham, Mass./The Brooks School) then blocked a Husky shot with nine ticks remaining to end Southern Maine's final offensive charge.
The Purple Knights hit the road for a pair of games, starting with the New England College at 7 p.m. on Friday, followed by a Saturday contest at 4 p.m. at Saint Anselm College. Both games are ECAC East events, with Saturday's game against Saint Anselm also counting toward the Northeast-10 Conference standings.
