Women's basketball downs nationally-regarded Holy Family, 68-63, improves to 2-0

Box Score

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The 2-0 Saint Michael's College women's basketball team used a 13-0 run to break open a three-point game early in the second half en route to knocking off nationally-regarded Holy Family (Pa.) University, 68-63, during the final game of the DoubleTree Tip-Off Classic on Saturday in the Ross Sports Center. The Tigers, now 0-2, received a vote toward the latest USA TODAY national poll and qualified for 10 of the past 11 NCAA Tournaments. In the other contest, Queens (N.Y.) College earned a 61-59 win over Franklin Pierce University. Both teams are 1-1.

Senior Maggie Sabine (Litchfield, Maine/Oak Hill/Central Maine CC) recorded 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals for Saint Michael's, which hosted a tournament for the 30th time since the 1977-78 season and downed Holy Family for the first time in four meetings. Classmate Kelly Frappier (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) shot 5-of-6 for 12 points with seven rebounds, and junior Makenzie Burud (Red Hook, N.Y./Coleman Catholic) posted 12 points and five boards. Sophomore Indira Evora (Somerville, Mass./Somerville) turned in 11 points, four assists and three steals, and first-year Leah Spencer (Brockton, Mass./Archbishop Williams) notched seven points and four caroms off the bench.

Junior Kasey Woetzel (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) paced Holy Family with 14 points, classmate Erin Fenningham (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) had 13 to go along with three steals, and first-year Kylie Giedemann (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) recorded 12 points and six boards.

With Saint Michael's ahead by a 34-31 count less than a minute into the second half, the hosts rattled off 13 straight points during a 3:02 stretch. Burud scored seven of them, while Sabine turned in four. The Purple Knights held Holy Family to 0-of-6 shooting with two turnovers in that time while forging a 47-31 advantage on Burud's bucket at 16:08. A Sabine jumper at 8:15 gave Saint Michael's its largest lead, 59-42, before the Tigers quickly rallied, scoring eight points in 39 seconds on the strength of six by Fenningham. Giedemann buried a three-pointer at 4:31 to make it 61-55 before sparking a 6-0 run with two free throws, and the Tigers trailed 65-63 after Woetzel's jumper at 1:10.

However, Sabine knocked down a long jumper with 41.5 seconds remaining and Frappier hauled in the rebound of a missed Tiger three before sinking a free throw at 30 seconds. Spencer came up with a steal on Holy Family's final possession with 11 seconds remaining to ice the victory. Saint Michael's shot 60.9 percent in the second stanza.

The teams exchanged the lead four times in the opening 6:15, with Sabine's jumper giving the Purple Knights an 8-7 edge and the lead for good. After Evora hit two free throws, the Tigers cut their deficit to one point five times, including when Fenningham connected for a pair of freebies at 5:34. First-year Lyric Blanch (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) later countered with two free throws before a Frappier steal led to Evora's jumper at 2:00, which pushed the hosts' edge to 30-24. Spencer hit a jumper in the paint in the closing seconds to give Saint Michael's a 32-27 lead by halftime. Sabine dropped in a lay-up 11 seconds into the second period before the Tigers scored the next four points just prior to the hosts' big run.

Saint Michael's returns to play on Wednesday by heading to Franklin Pierce at 5:30 p.m. for both teams' Northeast-10 Conference opener.
