Third-period rally sends No. 4 Saint Michael's past No. 1 Stonehill, 2-1, in NE-10 semi

Box Score

FOXBORO, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team snapped the longest winning streak in the nation on Saturday, rallying past top-seeded Stonehill College, 2-1, during the semifinal round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship in the Foxboro Sports Center.

Now 7-16-3 overall, the Purple Knights head to fellow upset winner No. 3 Southern New Hampshire University for the title game next Saturday at 2:10 p.m. The Penmen downed No. 2 Saint Anselm College, 4-1, in the other semifinal. The Skyhawks conclude their season at 16-10 after carrying a 10-game winning streak into the contest, the longest in Division II/III. Stonehill had been a perfect 11-0 against NE-10 teams this winter.

First-year defenders Danny Divis (Media, Pa./The Gunnery) and Stephen Inman (Coventry, R.I./Odessa Jackalopes) both scored third-period goals, and junior Dave Donzanti (West Chester, Pa./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 26 saves, blanking Stonehill for the final 56:43. Senior Ryan Arsenault (Reading, Mass./New Hampton School) dished assists on both goals after entering the contest with three points in 23 regular-season games. Junior Jeremy Wong (Montreal, Quebec/Tilton School) won eight face-offs, classmate William Côté (Quebec City, Quebec/Rice Memorial Prep) went 6-of-10 at the dot, and graduate student Tim McAuliffe (North Reading, Vt./Vermont Academy) was 6-of-11.

Saint Michael's improved to 6-3-2 in its last 11 games while remaining perfect in four all-time postseason meetings with the Skyhawks, all one-goal victories. The Purple and Gold previously qualified for the NE-10 Championship title game six times, winning five of those contests, and returns for the first time since 2011.

Sophomore Willy Baker (Suffern, N.Y./Hill School) netted Stonehill's marker, and junior Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Mass./Thayer Academy) had 23 saves. The hosts outshot the Purple Knights, 27-25.

Stonehill fired off five of the first six shots in the game, among them Baker scoring just 3:17 after the opening face-off. Sophomore Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Conn./The Gunnery) assisted. The Purple Knights regrouped to outshoot the hosts, 9-7, during the period, and both goalies posted 10 second-period stops to keep it a 1-0 game heading into the third.

The Skyhawks rattled off 10 of the 16 shots attempted during the final 20 minutes, but it was the Purple Knights who scored twice in a 4:59 stretch to claim the lead. After Stonehill killed off a 33-second 5-on-3 Saint Michael's power play that ended in the first four minutes, Inman came away with his fourth goal of the season at 6:19 following a scramble out front. The Purple Knights later killed off a penalty and withstood Stonehill sending a penalty shot wide at 10:11 before Divis tallied his seventh goal on an odd-man rush at 11:18. Arsenault and first-year Anthony Maiuri (Boxford, Mass./New Hampton School) both assisted, with Maiuri's his first point as a collegian.

Each shot during the final seven minutes came off of a Stonehill stick, with Donzanti stopping all six on goal, while two more were blocked by Saint Michael's skaters. The hosts pulled Tasiopoulos with 1:20 remaining and were able to get only one shot on goal, which was denied by Donzanti.
