Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Junior Kevin Altidor (Montreal, Quebec/Millbrook School) scored the game's lone goal with 3:28 remaining on Tuesday, lifting the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team past Assumption College, 1-0, at Cairns Arena during a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Purple Knights snapped a five-game losing streak in moving to 6-8-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the league, while the Greyhounds are 7-11 and 3-4.
Altidor's marker was his fifth of the season, while senior Dave Donzanti (West Chester, Pa./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 22 saves for his school-record third career shutout. Classmate AJ Pieprzak (Barrie, Ontario/Ridley College) and sophomore Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) assisted, as Pieprzak has points in 11 of his past 12 contests. Saint Michael's is 8-1 at home against Assumption since moving into Cairns Arena in 2001-02, and earned its first 1-0 win since Nov. 11, 1990, versus Stonehill College. With one NE-10 game remaining, the Purple Knights will await other league action to learn their postseason fate.
Junior Chris Hemhauser (Old Saybrook, Conn./Glastonbury) had 45 stops for Assumption, which has allowed only two goals in its past three NE-10 contests. The Greyhounds were 6-3 since a 1-7 start.
In the final four minutes, Altidor skated near the right post and sent a cross-crease pass that deflected off of an Assumption skater's skate at the left post and in for the lone tally of the game, at 16:32. Donzanti came up with a pair of big stops in the final minutes, saving senior Brennen Shaw's (Presque Isle, Maine/Brewster Academy) point-blank bid from the right circle at 17:01 and, with Hemhauser pulled for an extra skater, first-year Matt Cowles' (Farmington, Conn./Avon Old Farms) shot from the point directly off a face-off on the game's last shot.
Saint Michael's held an 11-7 edge in shots during a scoreless first period, with six of the attempts coming during a pair of power plays. The Purple Knights salted away Assumption's lone man advantage during the latter portion of the stanza, with skaters blocking two shots and Donzanti making four stops, including with his left leg pad off of junior Brandon Bete's (Greenfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) shot from the slot at 16:15.
Sophomore Shawn Morrow's (East Greenbush, N.Y./Kent School) shot from the slot during a 1-on-1 rush at 8:50 of the second period was stopped by Hemhauser's blocker, and senior Eric Robinson (Williston, Vt./Berkshire School) had a pair of follow-up shots denied. Less than a minute later, Donzanti stopped junior Alex Erban's (Attleboro, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) rush toward the other end of the ice. Morrow chipped the puck to himself off the right wall before firing a shot from the right circle at 12:27 that the goalie denied, and Donzanti stopped back-to-back attempts with 3:30 remaining.
Robinson's shot 30 seconds into the third period was slowed by Hemhauser's right armpit before being cleared by a skater as it trickled through the crease, and Dickman's deflection out front three minutes in was also stopped. Dickman had another point-blank opportunity turned away at 9:20 as one of four shots Hemhauser stopped during a Purple Knight power play. Assumption later found itself on a pair of man advantages in the closing 10 minutes, with Donzanti saving the Greyhounds' best chance, a point-blank bid at the right post from Bete at 11:00.
The Purple Knights jump back into Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action this weekend with a two-game road set in Maine. They first oppose the University of Southern Maine on Friday at 7 p.m.
