Men's ice hockey falls at Saint Anselm, 4-3, in overtime during NE-10 title game rematch

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Saint Anselm College senior Bryan Sullivan scored 16 seconds into overtime as the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team lost to the Hawks, 4-3, on Friday evening in Sullivan Arena during New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) play. The Purple Knights are 4-13 overall and 2-10 in the league, suffering their third one-goal loss of the season, while Saint Anselm is 10-6-1 and 6-5-1.

In a rematch of the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championship title game, senior Kevin Altidor (Montreal, Quebec/Millbrook School) scored twice for the visitors, while first-year Nic Hermary (Coquitlam, British Columbia/Melfort Mustangs) had a goal and an assist. Classmate Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Pomfret School) made 40 saves for his sixth 40-stop outing of the year, including during his fourth straight appearance. First-year Sam D'Antuono (Hingham, Mass./Dexter School) went 13-of-21 on faceoffs, while junior Justin McKenzie (Hawthorne, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) finished 7-for-11.

First-year Bryan Green scored twice for Saint Anselm, while junior Nick Leonard also tallied. Classmate Colin Soucy made 18 saves.

The Purple Knights led 3-2 into the final two minutes of regulation after killing nearly four straight minutes of penalties, and Altidor's shot immediately after the expiration at 18:11 was denied by Soucy. However, Saint Anselm won the ensuing draw, and Green tallied the equalizer at the 18:22 mark on the last shot of the period. Leonard won the opening faceoff in overtime, and senior Mark Meads was stopped by Johnson, but Sullivan collected the rebound and scored after 16 ticks.

The Hawks held a slight 12-10 in shots during a scoreless opening period. During one early five-plus-minute period of free-flowing play, when the whistle never stopped for a faceoff, Johnson made a pair of stops, while the Purple Knights fired four attempts on Soucy. Johnson made consecutive saves with a little less than two minutes remaining in the period, and junior Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) was denied twice in the final minute.

Saint Michael's went on the power play twice in the first five minutes of the second stanza, with Saint Anselm killing the first before the visitors earned another just three seconds after the initial man advantage ended. During that second power play, Altidor cashed in on the only shot, converting assists from D'Antuono and Hermary at the six-minute mark. The Hawks responded with the next 13 shots in the game, with Green converting one of those attempts at 11:59 to knot the contest. In that same stretch of consecutive shots, Leonard broke the deadlock with a power-play marker 17:55 into the period. Saint Anselm carried the 2-1 edge into the locker room.

Just 18 seconds into the third, D'Antuono won a faceoff, and Hermary scored the equalizer eight seconds later off a dish from junior Connor Mitchell (New Milford, Conn./Kent School). Less than six minutes later, at 6:20, Altidor found the back of the net for the second time thanks to a pass from first-year Colin Biebel (Roxborough Park, Colo./Walpole Express). Still up 3-2, the Purple Knights were assessed minors at 14:12 and 16:11 to provide Saint Anselm with a 3:59 stretch of power play, during which time Johnson came up with seven saves and Mitchell blocked two shots. D'Antuono blocked a final attempt, leading to the expiration of the second penalty and Altidor's ensuing bid to make it 4-2.

The Purple Knights remain on the road tomorrow to visit New England College at 4:30 p.m. The Pilgrims received a vote toward this week's U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III national poll.
