Johnson posts lowest tournament score by Purple Knight in eight years

CICERO, N.Y. - Saint Michael's College men's golf first-year Matt Johnson (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) became the first Purple Knight to break 150 in a multi-day tournament in eight years on Monday, as the Le Moyne Fall Invitational came to an end at the Lake Shore Yacht & Country Club. Saint Michael's took 17th place with 332 strokes, as Southern New Hampshire University won the 17-school meet at 578.

Johnson fired 149 strokes to tie for 19th thanks to a five-over 78 on Monday. His weekend score matched that turned in by Will Crall '09 at the 2008 Northeast-10 Conference Championship. With seven birdies for the meet, Johnson was one short of the leaders. Sophomore Colin Gaunt (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) tied for 73rd with 163 strokes, and classmate Tucker Buteau (Gorham, Maine/Tilton School) carded a 171. First-year Tim Donnelly (Lynn, Mass./Malden Catholic) was his team's final scorer, at 172.

Having completed their third straight tournament in New York, the Purple Knights will visit Cape Cod for the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association (NEIGA) Championship on Sunday and next Monday to finish the fall leg of the season.
