Box Score SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior Josh Dickman (Kapaa, Hawaii/Saint Paul's School) had a goal and an assist, and the Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team scored the game-winner early in the third period of a 3-2 victory over Daniel Webster College during its home opener on Friday evening at Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights improved to 1-1 in their New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) opener, while the Eagles remain winless through three games.
Senior defender Shawn Morrow (East Greenbush, N.Y./Kent School) and junior Eric Salzillo (Johnston, R.I./Boston Bandits) also scored for the hosts, and Salzillo added a 14-for-23 showing on faceoffs. Sophomore Sam D'Antuono (Hingham, Mass./Dexter School) was 19-of-28 at the dot, senior defenseman Danny Divis (Media, Pa./Minnesota Wilderness) dished out a pair of assists, and sophomore Chris Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Pomfret School) turned away 25 shots.
Junior Ryan Murray (Farmington Hills, Mich./Tri City Ice Hawks) collected a goal and an assist for Daniel Webster, sophomore Chris Timm (Dublin, Calif./Billing West) added a tally, and junior Anthony D'Urso (Rome, N.Y./AHI Fighting Spirit) made 43 saves.
In a scoreless first period, Salzillo had a bid on the doorstep skip wide 7:42 in, and D'Antuono was stopped on a one-timer at the right post 40 seconds later. Senior Justin McKenzie (Hawthorne, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) cut through the slot and redirected a one-timer wide at 10:55, and sophomore Patrick Doherty (Tewksbury, Mass./Middlesex Black Bears) tipped a shot from the high slot off the crossbar at 13:45. Eagle junior Matt Rasimowicz-Howell (Tyngsboro, Mass./Nichols) sent a one-timer wide right from in close at 14:30, and Salzillo's tip from the high slot hit D'Urso's mask with 2:15 remaining.
D'Urso came up with back-to-back stops nearly seven minutes into the second to keep it scoreless, denying senior Anthony Maiuri's (Boxford, Mass./New Hampton School) high-slot one-timer before stopping junior Keegan Finn (Yarmouth, Mass./Bay State Breakers) on the rebound.
The teams followed that by combining for three special teams goals in a matter of 2:59. Quick passing during a power play led to Dickman scoring from the left hash marks at 10:52, depositing his first goal since Feb. 28, 2015, after studying abroad in fall 2015 and playing only three games last spring. Divis and first-year William Santangeli (Oakville, Ontario/Saint Mark's School) both assisted. At 13:02, Morrow completed a shorthanded rush into the left circle by picking the right corner of the net, as senior Connor Mitchell (New Milford, Conn./Kent School) lent a hand on the goal. Just 49 seconds later, Murray concluded the Eagle power play by firing a shot from the left circle that hit a Purple Knight stick and fluttered over Johnson's right shoulder. With 1:30 to go, a loose puck trickled off of an Eagle skate and hit the right post.
After trailing 2-1 at the second intermission, Daniel Webster knotted the contest just 1:31 into the final period, as Timm tapped in a rebound at the right post after Murray was denied by Johnson on a rush up the left wing. Just 1:54 later, Salzillo put home the winner from high in the left circle on a power play, knocking in a rebound of Dickman's saved shot. Divis also assisted. Johnson made three big saves in the closing minutes to preserve the win, including blocking junior Anthony Langevin's (Albany, N.Y./Franklin Pierce) turnaround attempt from the left circle with his right pad at 16:40. With 25 seconds to go, Murray backhanded a shot directly off of a faceoff win that was turned away by the goalie, who made one final point-blank save with his left pad on first-year Brandon Beard's (Apopka, Fla./New York Bobcats) game-tying bid with seven ticks to go.
The Purple Knights, who are amid a three-game homestand over a five-day stretch, host the University of Southern Maine tomorrow at 4 p.m.
