SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's ice hockey team began a two-game Northeast-10 Conference weekend with Post University by losing a 3-1 decision on Friday evening in Cairns Arena.

THE ACTION

  • Engdahl scored the lone goal by either team during the opening two periods, tallying at 7:34 of the opening frame with a second effort out front after sophomore Ryan Mosher's initial shot was saved.
  • Saint Michael's rattled off a 19-8 advantage in shots in the second period, thanks in part to three power plays.
  • Lugo doubled the lead 37 seconds into the third frame, firing from the slot after senior Jake Raleigh had dug the puck from the corner.
  • With Murphy pulled for an extra skater on a delayed penalty late in regulation, the Purple Knights crept within 2-1. After Johnson's shot from the left circle was blocked wide, Schreiner banged in the rebound near the right post at 16:20.
  • The Purple and Gold gained a power play after the goal but was able to fire only one shot on net across the two minutes, which Brown denied, while junior Jeremy Routh (Hamden, Conn./New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) also had a shot blocked by Lugo.
  • With Murphy again pulled for an extra skater and less than a minute to go, Patrick Murphy gained possession in his own zone before firing from just inside the blue line near the boards into an empty net at 19:17.
