Men's Soccer's Late-Season Postseason Push Ends with 2-1 Loss at Saint Rose

ALBANY, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team's late-season postseason push came to an end on Tuesday with a season-ending 2-1 loss to regionally-ranked The College of Saint Rose at Sullivan Field.

The Purple Knights, who entered the day one point out of the eighth and final Northeast-10 Conference Championship position, nearly claimed a playoff berth despite standing winless in league play two weeks ago. The Golden Knights were among 12 teams under consideration in the first NCAA Super-Region 1 rankings.

GAME FACTS

  • After an 0-7-2 start, which included acclimating 14 first-years to college soccer, the Purple Knights entered the game 3-1-2 in their last six outings, having won three in a row. They finished with four 2-1 losses.
  • Schramm ended the season with a five-game point streak, with three goals and two assists in that time.
  • Both teams tallied 10 shots, while the visitors held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • The teams played their fifth consecutive one-goal affair and seventh straight game decided by a goal or less.

THE ACTION

  • Schramm put Saint Michael's on the board just 7:13 into the contest. Sophomore Tyler Santaniello (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) forced a takeaway just inside midfield before his through ball was knocked away by a Saint Rose defender, but Schramm ran on to the loose ball and hit the lower right corner of the net, beyond a diving Rozman.
  • Malmquist found the equalizer at 28:04, taking Schouby's long ball over top and striking from the right corner of the box.
  • Schouby also played a hand in the winner, splitting the defense to spring Soederlind for a quick breakaway, and he chipped a shot over a charging Boudreau at 52:33.
  • Schramm whipped a pass into the box during the 71st minute, giving junior Alessandro Pescina (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela/Colegio Loyola Gumilla) a chance to release a left-footed strike from the left side, but Rozman made a diving save near the post.
  • Boudreau kept it a one-goal affair in the 75th minute, coming out to stifle junior Saevar Jonsson's point-blank bid after sneaking behind the defense.
  • Schramm countered only 30 seconds later, running onto a through ball but being turned away by another Rozman diving stop, this time at the lower right corner.
  • Pescina had a shot denied in the 79th minute, and three corner kicks between the late 89th and mid-90th minutes yielded no shots. Pescina had one final bid blocked beyond the end line in the waning seconds, but the Purple Knights were unable to release an ensuing corner kick as the final buzzer sounded.
