GAME FACTS

  • The Purple Knights entered the day eighth in a league that accepts its top eight into the postseason. Saint Michael's, which finds itself one point short of eighth with one key game remaining on Wednesday, was seeking its first NE10 Championship berth since 2002.
  • Saint Michael's entered the day 16th in Division II in save percentage and 23rd in goals-against average. The Purple and Gold ended up allowing only nine goals in 15 games, setting a school record with a 0.60 GAA, shattering the 1989 team's figure (0.88). Its .870 save percentage was good for third in program history, short only of the 1989 (.903) and 1990 (.886) squads.
  • This marked the 30th time in its past 34 outings since 2019 that Saint Michael's played a contest decided by one goal or less.
  • The Purple Knights registered at least five wins in three straight seasons for the first time since a 13-year run between 1996 and 2008. Their .417 league winning percentage was their best since 2008 (.429).
  • Escobedo finished her brilliant career first in program history in career GAA (0.93), third in shutouts (13), sixth in save percentage (.824), eighth in wins (11), and ninth in minutes (3,104:13) despite starting for only two seasons. She also broke the school record for season GAA (0.60), tied Saint Michael's Athletic Hall of Famer Trish Hannan's '90 1989 school record with eight shutouts, and had the sixth-highest save percentage (.864). Brittany Cocozza '12 had held the career GAA mark (1.07) for more than a decade, while Gillian Goldman's '08 season GAA record (0.89) had stood since 2007.
  • The Purple Knights held a 14-6 lead in shots, while Assumption took four of the five corner kicks.

THE ACTION

  • Assumption threatened early, with sophomore Katherine Laboissonniere heading a shot high off of a corner kick serve during the sixth minute with Escobedo pursuing the cross for a punch-out.
  • In the 28th minute, senior Grace Gallo's (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) long free kick found the box and the head of first-year Bella DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), who quickly sent to the head of Williams, but her shot was swallowed by Walsh.
  • The Purple Knights broke through shortly thereafter, as Williams crossed through the box and the legs of a Greyhound defender, leaving Kosiba an opportunity to curl a shot beyond a diving keeper into the right corner with 33:35 gone.
  • Graduate student Morgan Paquin sent a dangerous shot from the right edge of the box just over the far corner of the frame in the 58th minute.
  • The Greyhounds leveled the score in the 67th minute, as senior Annie Irwin took a giveaway at midfield and sent Brown on a breakaway, with Brown finishing into the lower right corner and beyond a diving Escobedo.
  • Escobedo made a pair of outstanding stops in the final five minutes to ensure the tie, first diving to her left at 85:10 to deny senior Julia Sferlazza's close-range bid following a turnover in the final third before going low to block Irwin's point-blank shot with her knee with 30 seconds remaining.
  • Saint Michael's also had one final opportunity to go ahead, with junior back Sam Page (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) heading Kosiba's cross at Walsh from out front in the 88th minute.
