Welter Drills Three Home Runs During Softball's Three-Game Day in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Sophomore Marli Welter (Madison, N.J./Madison) blasted three of the Saint Michael's College softball team's seven home runs during a Sunday tripleheader, which included a 16-1, five-inning victory against Felician (N.J.) University in the opener. The Purple Knights lost a pair of one-run affairs to Salem (W.Va.) University, 7-6, and Dominican (N.Y.) College, 11-10 in eight innings, to cap their day of play at The Spring Games in the DiamondPlex Softball Complex.

THE ACTION

  • The Golden Falcons left two on in the top of the first inning before Cherry allowed only four runners the rest of the way.
  • Saint Michael's scored four runs on five hits in the home half, all with two down, as Waghorn sent an RBI single up the middle, Pisani blasted a two-run homer, and Welter knocked an RBI double.
  • The Purple Knights put the game away with eight runs on four hits and three errors in the second, keyed by Hiscock's two-run double and Waghorn's run-scoring two-bagger. Welter and sophomore Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) added sacrifice flies.
  • Leon led off with a home run in the Felician fourth before Saint Michael's hit two of its own in the bottom half, as Welter led off with a solo shot before Devens slugged a three-run blast.

GAME FACTS

  • The teams met for the third time, and for the first time since March 16, 2019.
  • An all-region player last year at NCAA Division III power Endicott College, Connor picked up her first hit as a Purple Knight, socking a two-run home run in the first inning.

THE ACTION

  • Connor's one-out blast made it 2-0 Saint Michael's in the top of the first inning.
  • An unearned run came around for the Tigers in the home half, and Turner's RBI single drove home the lone earned run in a four-run second frame.
  • Hiscock's two-out, two-run single trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth, but the teams traded runs from there.
  • Trujillo's RBI double in the fourth was met by Waghorn's two-out RBI knock in the sixth.
  • First-year Elaina Esteban poked an RBI double in the sixth, but Arruda's RBI double made it 7-6 in the seventh, and the tying run stood at third with no one out following an error. However, the next batter struck out before the final two hitters had fly balls caught.

GAME FACTS

  • Welter became the 11th Purple Knight to hit a pair of home runs in one game, becoming the first since Danielle Markowski '20 drilled two on April 14, 2019, at Stonehill College.

  • The teams met for the fourth time, but first since March 15, 2009.

THE ACTION

  • The teams combined to score in each of the first 11 half-innings, during which time Saint Michael's saw Dominican overcome three deficits.
  • Welter belted a three-run homer in the top of the first frame before three run-scoring hits brought the Chargers even in the home half.
  • Devens' groundout scored Sroczinski in the second before sophomore Jenna O'Reilly's RBI single again forced a tie.
  • Welter's second homer, a two-run shot in the third, staked her team to a 6-4 lead, which Lockwood wiped out with a three-run longball in the home half.
  • Devens cracked a tying solo shot to straightaway center field in the fourth, but Salcido's two-run dinger put Dominican up 9-7 in the bottom portion.
  • Sroczinski walked with the bases loaded in the fifth, and Saint Michael's had the sacks packed with none out but could score no further.
  • First-year Chloe McIntosh's sac fly extended the Charger lead to 10-8 in the bottom half, but Arruda drilled an opposite-field two-run single to tie the game in the sixth. The Purple and Gold again left the bases loaded, but Dominican put only two runners on base in the next two innings, and the game extended to extras.
  • Waghorn was placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker to begin the eighth and moved to third on a wild pitch with none out but advanced no further.
  • In the home half, McIntosh started on second and was the lead runner on a double steal with no one out. Sasser came through with the walk-off single with one down.
