Hiscock Provides Walk-Off Single, Saint Michael's Swats Four Homers During Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team swatted four home runs while sweeping The College of Saint Rose, 4-3 and 5-1, during a Senior Day doubleheader on Sunday at Doc Jacobs Field. Junior Hope Hiscock's (Schenectady, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons School) walk-off RBI single secured the game-one win, while the Purple Knights broke a school record for season home runs in the Northeast-10 Conference twinbill.

Prior to the contests, seniors Leigh Brandenburg (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and Courtney Norton (Georgetown, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) were both honored during a Senior Day ceremony.

RECORDS

  • Saint Michael's (8-21, 4-12 NE10), Saint Rose (12-27, 8-14 NE10)

GAME FACTS

  • The Purple Knights broke the 2007 team's school record for home runs (23), pushing their total to 26 by day's end thanks to four long balls.
  • Saint Michael's downed Saint Rose for the first time since April 14, 2009, while sweeping their first series doubleheader since April 22, 2006. The teams met for the first time since April 7, 2013.
  • Devens hit two home runs in the opener, moving her program-rookie-record total to seven this year. That figure ties Noelle Gill '05 for second overall in program history - Gill hit seven in both 2003 and 2004 - and is one shy of Ashley Harkins' '09 school mark, set in 2007.
  • Devens became the third Purple Knight with a two-homer game in 2022, joining sophomores Jenna Hoops (Woodbury, Minn./Visitation School) and Marli Welter (Madison, N.J./Madison). Prior to this season, only 10 women in program history had multi-home-run games. The 1978 team had been the lone Saint Michael's squad with even two student-athletes with multi-homer games in the same season.
  • Sophomore Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) went deep for the fifth time this year, tying Welter and four others for ninth in program history for a season.
  • First-year Kelleigh Simpson (West Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) picked up her first college win in the nightcap.

GAME 1
SAINT MICHAEL'S LEADERS

  • Devens, 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 HR
  • Connor, 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 HR
  • Hiscock, 1-for-4, 1 RBI
  • Junior Jackie Cherry (Franklin, Mass./Franklin), 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K

OPPONENT LEADERS

  • Sophomore Madison Chandler, 1-for-2, 1 RBI
  • First-year Isabella Milazzo, 1-for-2, 1 R, 1 BB; 6.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 7 K

THE ACTION

  • Devens hit her first home run to left center with two down in the first inning. Connor singled as the next batter up, but Milazzo held Saint Michael's to one base runner - a single by first-year Riley Sroczinski (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) with one out in the fifth - over the next five innings.
  • In the meantime, Saint Rose scored two runs on a quirky play in the second frame. With runners at second and third and no one out, Brandenburg secured a fly ball in right field, but after sending the ball back to the infield and preventing the runner from third to score, an ensuing throwing error plated both runs.
  • Chandler added a sac fly in the third, pushing the Golden Knight lead to 3-1.
  • Cherry yielded only three base runners, all on singles, over the remainder of the contest.
  • With two down in the sixth, Devens and Connor hit back-to-back home runs to nearly the identical spot in straightaway center field, tying the game.
  • Sroczinski stretched to hold first base while bringing in junior shortstop Haley Waghorn's (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) throw for the final out in the top of the seventh.
  • Junior Hannah Arruda (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) led off the home half with a single through the left side before being lifted for first-year pinch runner Kaylee Morey (Stonington, Maine/Deer Isle-Stonington). Junior Sadie Pratt (Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) laid down a perfect sac bunt that was thrown away, putting a pair of runners in scoring position. After the first Purple Knight was retired, Brandenburg loaded the bases with a bunt single, and Hiscock hit a hard ground ball off of the diving third baseman, which then ricocheted through the hole and into left field, for the walk-off knock.

GAME 2

  • Sophomore Angelica Johns (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook), 2-for-4, 1 R
  • Devens, 2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 2B

  • Pratt, 1-for-2, 1 R

  • Simpson, 4.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K, win
  • Cherry, 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K in relief

OPPONENT LEADERS

  • Senior Savanna Liverio-Tyler, 1-for-4, 1 RBI
  • First-year Hannah Breen, 6 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 7 K

THE ACTION

  • Saint Rose left a pair of runners in scoring position during the opening frame before putting a pair on base again in each the second, third and fifth innings. The visitors stayed scoreless until the final inning.
  • Arruda blasted a home run deep to left center leading off the second inning.
  • Welter's RBI single back up the box in the fourth pushed the lead to 2-0, and Devens and Connor knocked consecutive two-out RBI doubles in the fifth.
  • Hiscock knocked in another two-run run in the sixth with a single.
  • Down 5-0, Saint Rose put the first two batters on via walks in the seventh before junior Morgan Tyrrell singled with one down to load the bases. Cherry fielded a hard grounder back to the circle and threw home for Connor, who was pulled off the plate but applied the tag for the second out. Liverio-Tyler followed with a single up the middle that diving shortstop Pratt knocked down to keep on the infield, and a relay throw cut down another runner trying to score to end the game.
