Purple Knights Suffer Pair of One-Run Losses at Bentley, 8-7 and 4-3

WALTHAM, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost a pair of one-run decisions at Bentley University, 8-7 in eight innings and 4-3, on Thursday at the Bentley Softball Field during Northeast-10 Conference play. The opener was the resumption of a game suspended due to lightning on April 9.

GAME FACTS

  • Eleven of the Purple Knights' losses have come by two runs or fewer, with four of their eight one-run setbacks coming via a walk-off.
  • The opener was delayed due to lightning between the top and bottom of the fifth inning on April 9 before being resumed, only to be suspended for 19 days when lightning returned with one out in the bottom of the sixth.
  • First-year Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany), who has five home runs in the last five days, extended her program record for home runs to 10, becoming the seventh Division II first-year to reach double digits this season. She is tied for sixth in program history in career home runs, matching Meg Currier '07, Danielle Barbato '17 and Torie Rathwell '20.
  • Devens pushed her season hit total to 44, breaking Katy Newland's '08 17-year-old program rookie record (42). THE ACTION

  • Junior Kaylee Mankins' RBI single in the first scored Krause, who had led off with a double.
  • Saint Michael's scored five runs on six hits in the fourth inning, with Waghorn knocking an RBI double, junior Hannah Arruda (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) adding an RBI single, and Johns sending a two-run single up the middle.
  • Bentley countered with three unearned runs in the home half and two runs in the fifth, taking the lead on Hillier's two-out RBI single.
  • Upon the resumption of the contest on Thursday, Johns led off the seventh with a single before Devens launched a go-ahead two-run homer.
  • Krause led off the home half with a single before advancing on an outfield error, and two hit batters loaded the bases with one down. Hillier's sac fly tied the game and forced extra innings.

THE ACTION

  • Mankins' two-out RBI single in the first inning scored Hillier, who had doubled.
  • Devens countered with a two-out RBI knock of her own in the third for the Purple Knights' initial hit. Cherry, who had reached on an error, plated the tying run.
  • Hoops turned in a go-ahead RBI single in the fourth, and Johns' RBI groundout scored Connor in the fifth, giving Saint Michael's a 3-1 lead.
  • With two out and none on in the home half, Hillier singled before Mankins hit into a fielder's choice, but an error prolonged the inning. Bentley took advantage, with Cain cracking a two-run double and scoring on Welch's ensuing go-ahead RBI single.
  • Doiron retired all nine Purple Knights she faced.
