Women's Basketball Begins Challenging Week with Loss at Nationally-Regarded Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's basketball team opened a challenging week with a 63-48 loss to nationally-regarded Daemen University on Monday in Lumsden Gymnasium. The Wildcats received votes toward both of last week's national polls and are fourth in this week's D2SIDA East Region Media Poll. The Purple Knights also play regionally-ranked Le Moyne College and Southern New Hampshire University later this week.

THE ACTION

  • Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter, when the lead was exchanged four times. MacDonough's jumper at 41 seconds gave Saint Michael's a 10-9 edge, but Angeletti's three-pointer to beat the buzzer provided the Wildcats a two-point lead after one period.
  • Paige's triple pushed the Daemen edge to 15-10 at 8:50 of the second frame, but Brophy's three 1:07 later forced the first of three ties in the period.
  • Matz's lay-in with 16 ticks left had the hosts up 22-20, but MacDonough beat the buzzer with a trey, and the visitors led 23-22 at halftime.
  • Angeletti, Emborsky and Paige all drained threes in the opening 3:36 of the third quarter, and Daemen led 43-31 on first-year Claire Pikett's lay-up with 3:07 to go.
  • MacDonough and Brophy hit threes to bookend an 8-2 run, bringing Saint Michael's within 45-39 by the end of the stanza.
  • Emborsky hit a pair of threes and Matz knocked down one during a 2:31 stretch early in the fourth quarter that extended the Wildcat lead to 15, and the Purple Knights never again crept closer than 12 points.
