THE ACTION
  • The teams played through 10 ties and seven lead changes in the opening set. Saint Michael's trailed by as many as five points on four occasions, including 23-18, and faced set point at 24-21 after Hasbrouck's kill before scoring the next four points, with Báez Rentas' kill putting the hosts on top. After fending off two more set points, the Purple Knights notched the final three points, taking the 1-0 lead on senior Caitlin O'Connor's (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) kill.
  • On the strength of Almeida's service, Saint Michael's forged a 9-3 lead in the second stanza. Saint Rose wiped out a 14-9 deficit thanks to Moulder dropping five kills in a 9-1 response, and the visitors led 19-17 following a service error. The Purple Knights countered with eight of the final nine points, as four players had one kill.
  • Saint Michael's nabbed an 8-4 advantage to begin set No. 3 thanks to three Syverson kills, and another Syverson kill had her team up 15-13. The Golden Knights finished the set on a 12-2 run, with Vargas turning in three kills in that time.
  • Neither team led by more than three points in the fourth set until the final score, as consecutive Syverson kills made it 21-21 before Saint Rose benefited from errors on each point of a closing 4-0 run.

Saint Rose committed a service error for the next point, and Báez Rentas served the final six points of a 7-0 run that put Saint Michael's in front 13-11. Almeida had two kills and a block in that time. Moulder twice put home kills to bring the visitors within a point, but Almeida and O'Connor combined on a clinching block to cap the victory for the Purple and Gold.
