Men's Basketball Opens Season with 60-56 Loss to Bloomfield

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's basketball team opened the regular season with a 60-56 loss against Bloomfield College on Friday during the Best Western Windjammer Doc Jacobs Classic in the Ross Sports Center. In the day's second contest, Felician University downed Assumption University, 88-68.

  • The teams met for the second time ever in the Ross Sports Center, last squaring off in Colchester in Dec. 10, 1999.
THE ACTION
  • Bloomfield used a 13-3 run to open a 17-8 lead by 10:17 of the first half, with Ellis scoring the first five points.
  • Saint Michael's later countered with a 21-3 run to lead by a 31-22 count with 2:03 to go. Fricas (7), Yepdo (5) and Reid (4) combined for 16 of the points.
  • The Purple Knights were still up 40-34 on Reid's lay-in at 14:44 of the second stanza before the Bears responded with a 14-2 stretch, led by six points from redshirt sophomore Kareeme Davis.
  • Reid knocked down a pair of free throws with 5:57 left to tie the contest (48-48) for the first of four deadlocks down the stretch. Reid's three-point play with 2:50 to go had his team up 54-52, but Connor's jumper at 1:38 tied the game.
  • Connor's go-ahead hoop with 55 seconds to go was met by Yepdo's bucket 12 seconds later, but another Connor jumper with 18 ticks remaining made it 58-56 in the Bears' favor.
  • On the Purple Knights' next possession, Connor came up with a steal with seven seconds to go, and Ellis made a pair of free throws at six seconds to seal the win.
