Kveno Takes Second in Giant Slalom at EISA Championship

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Sophomore Eirik Kveno (Asker, Norway/Dønski VGS) placed second in the giant slalom on Friday as the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams opened action at the two-day Saint Lawrence University Carnival, which is tripling as the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and NCAA East Regional Championship. Alpine races are occurring at Whiteface Mountain, while Nordic events are at Mount Van Hoevenberg, with both also the host venues of next month's NCAA Championship.

CARNIVAL FACTS

  • Between Alpine and Nordic, Saint Michael's is sixth among 15 schools with 257 points, just short of fifth-place Colby College (262).

ALPINE
CARNIVAL FACTS

  • The men earned their third straight top-two finish in the GS while placing among the top three in that discipline for the fifth time in as many carnivals. It was their eighth top-three finish in nine events this year. With 106 points, they trimmed third-place Dartmouth College (99) and fourth-place University of New Hampshire (86) while only trailing the University of Vermont (135). The runner-up finish was their best at an EISA Championship since tying for second during the 2019 GS.
  • The women took seventh (63), within range of sixth-place New Hampshire (72) and fifth-place Plymouth State University (76).
  • The Purple Knight men and women combined to score third-place points in Friday's GS (169), clipping Middlebury College (166) and New Hampshire (158) while finishing behind only UVM (228) and Dartmouth (225).
  • Through 10 races this winter, Purple and Gold men's and women's Alpine skiers have reached the podium - necessitating a top-three finish - 10 times. Saint Michael's Alpine skiers have nearly matched their podium total between the 2018 and 2022 seasons (11).
