LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to place sixth among 15 schools when the Saint Lawrence University Carnival concluded on Saturday. The carnival, which tripled as the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and NCAA East Regional Championship, held Alpine races at Whiteface Mountain and Nordic competitions at Mount Van Hoevenberg.
CARNIVAL FACTS
- The Purple Knights finished sixth at the EISA Championship for the second straight year, matching their highest combined placement at any carnival since the EISA consolidated its two leagues for the 1993-94 school year.
- The Alpine and Nordic squads combined for 450 points to clip seventh-place Harvard University (436).
- The University of Vermont won the carnival with 970 points.
ALPINE
CARNIVAL FACTS
- The women captured seventh in Saturday's slalom with 67 points, five short of sixth-place Colby College. Between both days, they scored seventh-place points (130), just outside the top five, following Colby (154) and Plymouth State University (156).
- The men claimed ninth place (58) in the slalom but were only nine points shy of fifth place in a tight field. The Purple Knights placed third (164) across both days of the EISA Championship, behind only Dartmouth College (214) and UVM (268).
- Saint Michael's Alpine took fifth for the entire weekend with 294 points, trailing Middlebury College (327), the University of New Hampshire (328), Dartmouth (427) and UVM (496).
- Sophomores Helene Kristoffersen (Rælingen, Norway/Dønski VGS) and Eirik Kveno (Asker, Norway/Dønski VGS) both secured spots on the EISA All-East first team, necessitating a top-five finish in the season points rankings, with Kristoffersen winning the women's GS points crown. Junior Simen Strand (Høvik, Norway/Dønski VGS) was placed on the second team, as he and Kveno repeated as All-EISA. They joined four-time qualifier Guillaume Grand '19 as the lone multi-time All-EISA skiers in the modern era of the league. Kristoffersen was the first Purple Knight woman to claim all-conference since Nordic skier Hege Vethe '98 in 1996, and the initial Alpine skier since Jennifer Coan '94 in 1994 as part of EISA Division II. The last time at least three All-EISA skiers hailed from the same Saint Michael's team was in 1993, when five Alpine skiers - all women - and four Nordic skiers were honored in EISA Division II.
- Saint Michael's will send four qualifiers back to Whiteface Mountain for the NCAA Championship on March 8 and 10, as Kristoffersen, Kveno, Strand and first-year Gray Flanagan (West Burke, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) will represent the College.
