Men's Tennis Opens Spring with 6-3 Setback at No. 27 Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. - The regionally-ranked Saint Michael's College men's tennis team opened the spring with a 6-3 loss at No. 27 Brandeis University on Saturday in the Gosman Athletic Center. The Purple Knights, who met their third straight nationally-ranked foe, were 10th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Region poll, while the Judges are 27th in the ITA Division III national rankings and ninth in the Northeast.

THE ACTION

  • Billman and Moser sided for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles in their first match together, but the Purple Knights trailed 2-1 heading into singles.
  • Senior Jason Boucher (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) and junior Tristian Du Plessis (Rustenburg, South Africa/Hoërskool Waterkloof/Wallace State CC) lost in their first match as partners by an 8-4 count at No. 2, while Weiss and senior Seb Tonini (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) made their eighth career appearances alongside one another but first as a top tandem, losing by an 8-1 count.
  • Brandeis took a 3-1 lead when Moser lost a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles, but Weiss earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory during his initial appearance at No. 1 this season.
  • The Judges clinched the match by landing a trio of wins between No. 3 and 5. Billman was downed by a 6-1, 6-2 count in the fifth spot for the deciding point, Du Plessis lost a pair of 6-4 sets in the third position, and Boucher suffered a 7-5, 6-4 defeat at No. 4.
  • Barroso rounded out the lengthy match with a comeback victory in the sixth position, rallying from down a set and then a 4-2 hole in the super tiebreaker to claim a 5-7, 7-6 (7-2), 10-5 triumph.
