Softball Defeats Molloy, 2-1, During Sunday Split in Florida

LEESBURG, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team split a pair of contests for the third straight day on Sunday during The Spring Games at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex. The Purple Knights lost their opener to Purdue University Northwest (Ind.), 6-3, before downing Molloy (N.Y.) University, 2-1.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS

  • Saint Michael's defeated a Molloy squad that upset eighth-ranked University of Indianapolis on Saturday.
  • The Purple Knights downed Molloy for the first time in four tries while moving to 1-2 against Purdue Northwest.
  • First-year CJ Davidson (Canyon Lake, Calif./Vista Murrieta) ripped her third triple in five games during the opener with Purdue Northwest before earning her first collegiate pitching victory in the nightcap with Molloy. The school record for triples in an entire season is five, and Saint Michael's had three as a team across 64 games between the 2021 and 2022 seasons combined.

THE ACTION

  • Michko hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning before Shroyer's RBI single pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second.
  • Arruda led off the third inning with a solo homer.
  • Michko countered with a leadoff dinger of her own in the home half, and Schultz's RBI double made it 5-1.
  • Hiscock's two-run double in the fifth cut the deficit to two runs.
  • Schultz's solo homer pushed the lead back to 6-3 in the fifth.
  • Waghorn and senior Sadie Pratt (Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) started the seventh with consecutive singles to bring the tying run to the plate, but a fielder's choice by that batter was followed by a game-ending double play.

THE ACTION

  • With Hand on first and two down in the top of the second inning, sophomore Cheralyn Dusharme singled through the right side, but right fielder Pratt cut down Hand trying to reach third base on the play.
  • Pratt came up big again in the third, singling home Waghorn (double) and Davidson.
  • Hand and Burns doubled back-to-back with one out in the fourth to produce a 2-1 margin, but Burns was ultimately stranded at third base.
  • Junior catcher Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) caught a runner trying to steal second with Bachman batting in the fifth, an out made more glaring when Bachman followed with a double. The next two batters were put out through the air.
  • Bachman singled with two out in the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate, but Davidson induced a game-ending groundout to clinch the win.
