Softball Swept by Franklin Pierce in NE10 Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College softball team lost both ends of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader to Franklin Pierce University, 6-0 and 7-2, on Monday at Doc Jacobs Field.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS

  • Franklin Pierce entered the day second in Division II in stolen bases per game (3.7), with 113 in 119 attempts. The Purple Knights held the Ravens to just three steals across the twinbill, including zero in the opener, as junior catcher Meghan Connor (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans/Endicott) cut down the lone attempt.

THE ACTION

  • Williams' RBI double plated a first-inning run before Melchert's solo homer made it 2-0 in the second.
  • Williams and Cangiano singled back-to-back to begin the third frame before Connor caught Williams trying to take third on a double steal try to squelch the Ravens' running game.
  • Franklin Pierce scored a fourth run on a two-out error in the fourth.

THE ACTION

  • Johns' infield single scored senior Sadie Pratt (Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) to give Saint Michael's a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
  • First-year Hannah Wodecki's two-out RBI double tied the game in the second, but Johns countered with an RBI knock up the middle during the third to put the hosts back in front.
  • An infield error led to four unearned runs scoring for the Ravens in the fourth, with Williams knocking a two-out RBI double to cap the frame.
  • Cangiano's RBI single pushed the lead to 6-2 in the sixth, but the visitors left the bases loaded. Sophomore Anna Erikson added a sac fly in the seventh.
  • The Purple Knights left five on base over the final four innings without pushing another run across.
