Devens' Walk-Off Home Run Caps Softball's Twinbill Sweep of AIC

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Sophomore Jenna Devens (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) drilled a walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to finish the Saint Michael's College softball team's sweep of American International College, 2-1 and 7-5 in nine innings, on Friday at Doc Jacobs Field. Devens capped the Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with the first walk-off home run in the modern history of the program.

DOUBLEHEADER FACTS

  • Devens' home run was the 17th of her career, breaking a tie with Kathy O'Neil '81 for second in program history. Devens trails only Noelle Gill '05 (20) on the program's all-time list. She hit what is believed to be the first walk-off home run by a Purple Knight since the program was reestablished in 1990.
  • The Purple and Gold's 13 wins are its most since 2007 (26-14).
  • The Purple Knights have won six of their last seven home meetings with AIC.

THE ACTION

  • AIC scored in the opening inning before being held off the board for the next 12 frames of the twinbill. Junior Kodi Gora's sac fly put the Yellow Jackets in front, but Simpson escaped a bases-loaded threat without further damage thanks to a groundout.
  • Hiscock led off the fourth inning with a tying solo home run, and Welter drew a two-out bases-loaded walk the following frame to force home sophomore Kiera Parker (Weymouth, Mass./Framingham/Stevenson) with the go-ahead run.
  • Simpson allowed only one base runner over the final two innings to finish off the win.

THE ACTION

  • Devens doubled home Pratt before scoring on Johns' sac fly during a three-run third inning. Davidson's RBI single made it 3-0.
  • Hearn escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth with a groundout but otherwise cruised into the seventh inning carrying a three-hit shutout. However, AIC picked up three runs on four hits in that frame alone, with Wells knocking a two-run double before scoring on Jimenez's tying RBI single. First-year left fielder Brooke Edgerly (Morley, Mich./Morley Stanwood) prevented further damage by throwing a second runner trying to score on Jimenez's knock out at the plate.
  • Sanchez dumped a two-out RBI double into right field to plate the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, but Connor came off the bench to send a two-out RBI single back up the middle and force another extra frame.
  • Gora drew a bases-loaded walk with two down in the ninth to put AIC up 5-4, but Devens finished off the Yellow Jacket rally with a strikeout.
  • Botting led off the home half with a triple to the gap in right, and Pratt walked before stealing second base. Devens followed by launching her three-run home run to straightaway center field.
